My friend Shelli came up from New York City so that we could go plein air painting together for a couple of days. We were painting alongside the stream behind my house and she said, “Is this what you call ‘streaming’?” 🙂

For once I left the stream out of my painting. The recently-opened forsythia blossoms and evergreens caught my eye, along with the chunky textures of the big willow trunk. It was a gorgeous afternoon, but still very cold. In spite of the spring colors, I wondered if spring is really here. Maybe it’s just an optical illusion!

This is another plein air painting of the Palisades, painted from the east side of the Hudson River. The goose did actually swim right by as I was painting, so I figured he wanted to be included. Pretty soon those trees on the far shoreline will leaf out and everything will be green. It always seems to happen just overnight!

I almost changed my mind last night about going out to paint plein air at sunrise when I heard it was going to be overcast. However, I found myself awake at 5am, and since I was already packed up to go, I decided to go anyway. I was thinking that I’d just do some value studies, but as the sun came up and I saw the beautiful soft colors, I couldn’t resist the color work. Now I’m so glad I went. I used just one each of red, yellow and blue, plus white. The birds really were sitting there on the tree just like this. Some deer trotted by too, but I couldn’t get them into the painting in time.

I went to Marshlands Conservancy in Rye yesterday. It was a gorgeous day and although I didn’t have time to stop and paint, I got loads of wonderful photo references. Now I have some compositional ideas for when I return there to paint later in the spring, as well as some things to work on during rainy days.

This mom was having a lot of fun following her little boy around the beach on Long Island Sound. He went exploring every nook along the shoreline. It was a chilly, spring afternoon, but the bright sunlight made everything light up.

I used an expanded palette for this painting. I think I actually dipped into every single color here. It’s unusual for me to use so many.

I don’t often offer framed art on my website, but I found these long format frames and thought they’d be great for smaller landscapes horizontally, and floral still lifes vertically! This painting was done from a photo I took on my way to Monhegan Island by boat. Ram Island Light is close to Boothbay Harbor in Maine. Both the keeper’s house and the lighthouse were built in 1883. I’ve been wanting to paint them for ages!

This is my favorite tree to paint by the lakeshore. The foliage changes dramatically with the seasons, and the twisting trunk and branches are so interesting to paint. We lost a big section of the tree in a wind and rain storm last week! I hope it will be able to recover.

I’m loving painting these flowers in the living room. Today I set up a gorgeous Moorecroft vase of flowers on top of the mantle, in front of one of my Hudson River paintings with Storm King Mountain. I needed a high vantage point to paint it, so I brought my Soltek easel into the living room and set my painting box on top of it!

I’m having a hard time getting a decent photo with the mat, but this one will at least give you an idea of what the mat looks like!

My husband went out to do errands this morning and came home with a gorgeous bouquet for me! I took out a bunch of my favorite vases and filled them with flowers. These two vases are in the living room, under one of my large paintings of a scene from Boscobel Restoration of the Hudson River overview. I stood by the stairway and leaned my painting box on the handrail to paint this! I like the way the composition of this living room scene leads the eye around in a circle. The strong red of the little vase balances the heavier objects on the left side of the painting. I haven’t done any paintings of interiors for awhile. I guess I’d better do a bunch before plein air season gets underway!

We had to leave our usual life drawing studio due to a solvent spill. I was painting in oils, but when we moved to the clay room, there wasn’t room for my oil painting gear. Fortunately, I had a little Winsor Newton Artist watercolor pan set in my purse and a nice umber Cretacolor stick, and some Arches paper in the car, so I pulled those out instead. You know what they say….When life throws you lemons, make lemonade! So, that’s what I did.

This little brass bird, which is one of my favorite still life objects, was the perfect complement for the pinks and violets of the mums. It picked up some of the reflected color and cast it into the shadows. This was painted with brushes and palette knives. There’s a lot of texture in the thick paint that is hard to show in a digital image.

This is definitely one of my favorites of the series so far. It felt great to break out my pastels for a landscape again, something I haven’t done for quite some time. This twisted tree is one of my favorites along the lakeshore. I got it at the RiverWinds Gallery while out gallery-hopping with friends. As soon as I saw it there on display, I knew I had to paint it!

This was painted in two sittings from life. I may make some minor adjustments next week, but it is basically finished. I had a wonderful time playing with the warm and cool colors. There was a warm floodlight on, but also cool blue light from outside streaming in through the windows. The combination of light types made for some interesting challenges and color combinations.

Normally in life drawing and painting, artists avoid the hands. They are so complex, and difficult to render in a short time. I think everybody was glad that Jean took this pose with her hands behind her back! They were all on the other side of her. I finished my painting from the front last week, so this morning I went behind her to take on the enemy directly in my own, personal challenge. It was a three hour pose with breaks, and of course the hands changed a bit each time, making a tough subject even harder.

This was painted from the front porch of my friend Cathy’s house. She has a fabulous view of the distant hills, and the foreground tree was lit up against the dark hillside. The tops of the grasses and goldenrod on the field were illuminated by the strong morning light, and popped against the deep shadows.

I did some sketching today and haven’t had a chance to photograph any of them, so I’m bumping up this painting for those who haven’t seen it yet. It’s one of my favorites from the fall.

This morning in open studio, I finished off this painting of Jean. I wanted to take it a bit further than this, but at 16×8″, the painting was just too small to work it more—at least until I get new glasses! The head is only about an inch and a half high or so, so you can imagine trying to paint facial details standing at an easel.

Once I was done with that, there was still an hour or so of studio time left, so I started a monochrome oil portrait of her, then wiped it off at the end of the session. Why’d I do that? I have no idea! I was actually pretty pleased with it, but after the first wipe with the cloth, it was too late to go back.

Jean will be back next week and I’ll paint her from a different angle.

This was about a 1/2 hour sketch of Michelle. The poses aren’t that long, so I focused mostly on her face. I think I’m finally starting to get the hang of the way these carbon pencils react with water. There is definitely a learning curve with them. I like that they can get way darker than graphite, and thus extend the value range when working in monochrome.

My apologies to those who tried to get to my site today and were unable to get the front page to load. The problem seemed to be caused by Mapstats. I took it off my site and now it’s loading like lightning.

This pastel of Jean was done start to finish in a three hour pose, minus breaks. I really loved the way the light hit her face from this nearly backlit position, and the influence of the burgundy velvet on her skin, combined with the warm light.

I love this orange flower paired with the clementine, and the bright red, Marilyn Price vase seemed the perfect item to tie the two together. I draped a blue cloth behind them to make the warm colors pop.

Spending so much time sketching with watercolors in my sketchbook lately put me in the mood to do something sketchy in oils too. I really enjoyed painting these flowers that my husband gave me. It felt great to break loose from a more confining size and style and paint something with more expressive brushwork. I think I’ll do more of these!

Art Spectrum Colourfix is an archival surface for all media, but is generally used for pastels. I love the way it took the oil paint! I’ve used it for both pastels and acrylics, but this was the first time I tried it with oils. I’ll definitely be working on this surface a lot more!

I must be feeling a little better today, because I was somehow able to summon the energy to trudge down to the studio and do this portrait of Lulu, one of my Jenday Conures. We have five parrots here, but Lulu prides herself on being the biggest troublemaker of them all. She loves to sit on my shoulder, where she constantly picks at my shirt collar or hair, and I have to wrestle my eyeglasses away from her! It’s hard to get angry with her when she turns around and says, “Kiss?”

I had picked up a few long/tall format frames, and they turned out to be perfect for this painting of Lulu, so this painting is available framed!

I couldn’t resist showing Lulu her portrait. She thinks it makes her appear too sophisticated. I think I’ll have to do another with her doing some of her usual bratty antics!

Since I’m still sick, I am bumping up a painting of one of my favorite trees along the Hudson River to share with my viewers. It’s become hidden in the depths of my blog, so I’m happy to pull it up to the top again where it can be seen. I did some sketches today, but don’t have the energy to get into the workshop to take pictures of them and do the uploading.

This was painted on a warm, sunny fall day. I took advantage of it by driving over to Garrison and painting my favorite tree along the Hudson River. It is just opposite West Point Military Academy. Fortunately for me, the tree still had leaves, though it was already November!

This painting is already dry and varnished, so it’s ready to send and would make a great gift!

Today I pulled out my acrylics to finish up this still life that I started last week. When I left for Florida, I put the bowl of fruit into the refrigerator with a sign on it saying, “Jamie’s Still Life—DO NOT EAT!” I suppose they got the message, because it was still there today. I think I’ll have a clementine now!

Here are some of the previous stages of the painting:

First I drew in my composition with acrylic burnt sienna paint, and blocked in some values. I don’t spend too much time on this stage—just enough to kill some of the white support, add a little complexity to the color, and give myself a road map for local color and values.

Next, I set out a pretty large selection of colors for this painting because I really wanted to capture the vibrancy of the fruit and bright bowl:

I started with the shadow areas, and worked until the support was covered with the local colors.

To finish, I pushed lights and darks, and added in some details, highlights, and reflected color.

What a miserable, rainy day outside! I decided over the weekend that I’d like to start a series painted from windows, and what do you know—the very first day I go at it, it’s grey and raining. I really enjoyed capturing the remains of the fall colors from inside the warm, cozy space here. I’m amazed by how long the oak trees are hanging onto their leaves this year.

This was painted from a photo taken during the “Night of the Amazing Sunset”, which I will always remember. A huge double rainbow over the lake followed a late summer shower a couple of months ago. The sky glowed everywhere. The rainbow was to the east, and this amazing sunset was the south view that evening. It’s times like this when I consider myself so fortunate to live by the lake. I can run out at a moment’s notice to capture spectacular conditions when they appear!

I couldn’t resist “pushing” the color in this painting. It was so vividly colorful in my memory. Sometimes I just need to let loose and allow the color junkie in me to emerge. Sunsets present the perfect opportunity for that! I’d like to paint this scene again soon with a little more restraint too. 🙂

Every fall, I start putting together ideas for what I’d like to paint in the winter. That way, when fall draws to an end, I’m enthusiastic about starting my new winter life in the studio. This little, old yellow jug was purchased at a flea market recently. It’s worn, warm, ochre finish and subtle variations in color led me to pair it with these hickory nuts that I collected on one of my plein air outings. Rather than putting them against a cool-colored background for contrast, I decided to go with a warm background and play with the subtle color shifts for a highly unified color scheme in the painting. The whole thing feels like fall to me. This is the little jug’s painting debut, though the hickory nuts did make it into a recent watercolor in my sketchbook!

Looking on as I painted were two of my studio mascots, basking in the warm sunlight streaming in through the window. Their names are Lulu and Lucy, though I affectionately refer to them collectively as “Double Trouble”. They are Jenday Conures. I leave their cage door open when I’m in the studio, and they go in and out as they please. Lulu (the closer of the two in the photo) likes to say “kiss” and “up”. She expects any visitors to pick her up and tell her what a good bird she is (even when she’s not!)

Finally this painting is done. Here is the painting demo, as promised. My palette consisted of:

Titanium White

I started with the Transparent Red Oxide, using Golden Fluid Acrylics. After a few placement lines, I blocked in my midtones and darks:

Next, I added Ultramarine Blue for the coolest darks, and Hansa Yellow Light for the lightest areas.

Then I laid in my sky, using Ultramarine Blue, Titanium White, and a touch of Phthalo Blue to bring the sky back to a mid-blue and give it a little chroma boost. (I apologize for the glare in this image.)

Once the sky is in, I start working local color, allowing my underpainting to show through in places. This is where I left off the other day, when I posted the image:

From there, I added more variations to my colors, filled out the textures of the trees, and pushed the lights and darks to create more contrast. Then the finishing touches went in, like the tree trunks and the stone wall in the background. Voila…done!

This was painted on location from Cold Spring, New York, along the shore of the Hudson River. Crow’s Nest Mountain is actually 42 feet higher than neighboring Storm King, but doesn’t get as much of the publicity. The moon was setting over the cliffs, presenting an irresistible scene. I thought I’d show a demo of my process, so I took some photos along the way.

I started by mixed up a painting “medium” of Golden Acrylic Flow Release in a ratio of 1:10 with water, poured some of that into a little palette cup, and added about 25% Golden Acrylic Glazing Liquid (Gloss). I used that to dilute paint for my underpainting, so as not to underbind the paint, and to help the flow of the color.

I began drawing in a couple of lines with heavily diluted Transparent Red Oxide. Once the placement lines were in, I started blocking in darks with thicker paint, and used thinner washes on the midtones. Then I used Transparent Yellow Oxide over the light areas (except for the sky). Areas of this photo appear blue due to sky reflection; those areas are actually white.

Next, I pulled out some Ultramarine blue, and used that combined with the transparent yellow and red oxides to block in cool darks and start a green wash on the foreground. Adding Titanium white and just a dash of phthalo blue to the ultramarine, I blocked in the sky and some sky holes in the tree.

Below is a photo of the painting on my easel, with the scene in the background, so you can see what I was working on. Compositionally, I’d have needed a wider canvas to fit in these elements if I wanted to keep everything to scale. Instead, I compressed the scene, shortening the width of the mountain, and bringing the moon over and down toward the peak. (You can just barely see the moon in the photo of the scene, in the upper right corner.)

I added Hansa Yellow Opaque and Napthol Red to my palette, and started working on the local color. I wanted to bring out the warm tones in the cliffs, so started putting in the pinks and violets early on. The red underpainting helped with that, as well as giving that orangy fall atmosphere. Here it is at the “almost done” point:

Lastly, I added cooler colors to the cliff face and did a once-over throughout the painting, adding finishing touches and making adjustments.

There has been a lot of interest in my acrylics on watercolor paper, so Bannerman Castle Trust took me out to Bannerman’s Island by boat to paint more for the gallery! It’s a tough job, but somebody’s got to do it. *big grin* I always have the time of my life when I go out there to paint, and this time was no exception!

To give you an idea of how tough it can be to get around parts of the island, here’s a picture of where I was when I painted this painting. I had to lug my equipment up the slope, and then down this side, then back up again. I initially set my chair where you see it here, but then moved it down to where I took this picture from, for the better vantage point closer to the water.

Everybody was painting the river or the orchard, but I was drawn to these two chairs facing the river. Many thanks to everybody who came out to Ward Pound Ridge Reservation today for our second show reception and to see us paint! The building with the gallery where our show is has a nice view of the little “toll booth” on the preserve where the parking fees are collected. The trees beyond were at peak fall performance, and the fields were ablaze with pink grasses. It provided the perfect fall subject to paint while chatting with visitors to the show.

I am finally getting a little tired of overcast mornings. I decided to do this one very small, and sat in front of one of my favorite fall trees to paint. The quarter is there for size reference; the painting is just 2″ square! I love the way the tree twists and bends. These tiny stretched canvases are just too cute.

This morning I painted at the Open Land Foundation on Baxter Road in North Salem, New York. I met lots of friendly folks with their dogs, and thoroughly enjoyed the gorgeous fall weather and serene location. I walked all over trying to select a scene; it seemed like there was a paintable vista everywhere I looked. I finally chose this location near the road, drawn by the overlook to the pond and the strong color of the goldenrod.

Plein air painting is always so full of suspense. Not only don’t you know how the painting will turn out, but you never know what may happen on the journey and during the process. It’s always an adventure; I think that’s why I’m so hooked!

A few days ago when I went to Long Island Sound to paint at Marshlands Conservancy, it was an easy ride, and even the painting process seemed effortless. By contrast, today was a true traffic nightmare, and I felt like I fought for this painting every step of the way! That really took me by surprise. I’ve painted the Constitution Marsh overview from Boscobel so many times that I never thought this marsh view in Rye would give me such a battle. I came home so tired that I had to take a nap!

This morning I drove down to the Marshlands Conservancy on Long Island Sound in Rye, New York, and spent the morning with the cool breeze blowing and my bare feet in the warm sand. I don’t think I’ve been here for over 20 years, but I sure am going to revisit very soon! The smell of the salt air and the serenity, combined with fabulous views, are truly plein air heaven!

This is another plein air painting done along the Hudson River from my favorite spot in Cold Spring, NY. I just can’t get enough of this location! Storm King Mountain is on the left, and Breakneck Ridge on the right, with Little Stony Point jutting out into the river. Watching the huge barges, tugs and beautiful sailboats pass through the middle could become a favorite pastime! The clouds were truly amazing in the morning, and the chroma was so strong that I had to pull out the phthalo blue to get the beautiful almost-turquoise color low in the sky.

I went up to Frederic Church’s estate, Olana, to paint and soak up some of that Hudson River School aura! This one was done sitting on the side steps of his mansion, just before sunset. It was cool and breezy, with the glow of the late day light overlooking the breathtaking Hudson view.

I’ve been so busy painting that I haven’t had a chance to photograph work and post! I just got home from the beautiful Ward Pound Ridge Reservation. The field grasses are glowing red, some of the leaves are starting to turn, and every view there was simply stunning. This is the old farmhouse on the property that now houses the offices and one of the galleries.

The Garden Club has been very busy dressing up the island with gorgeous annuals and perennials. This flower and vegetable garden below the residence castle has an exquisite view downriver. I painted it on location the other day in a vertical format, but I like this horizontal a lot better compositionally.

It was brutally hot today. I wanted to paint the Rockefeller Stone Barns, but couldn’t find a shady vantage point. I wandered around until I found a shady spot with picnic tables. There was a lovely view of this stunning oak tree beside a path and field, so I was able to enjoy some much-needed shade while painting.

It’s overcast and threatening to rain today, so I went through my Acadia National Park photos and selected this scene for today’s painting rather than venturing out to paint en plein air. It brought back wonderful memories of being up in Maine, wandering along the trails by the ocean.

This is gouache (opague watercolor) painted on 100% rag, archival Fabriano paper. It is matted in an ivory mat with a blue liner that shows off the blues in the painting and complements any decor. It’s all ready to pop into any standard 8×10 inch frame.

I went into an antique shop and saw this little blue cobalt pitcher/vase and just HAD to have it to add to the vase collection! I told the man in the shop that I’m an artist and he immediately knocked 1/3 off the price, telling me that “artist” is a magic word. hehehe…This is its still life debut. I paired it up with some yellow roses for contrast, the brass bird for color cohesion, and the baby’s breath to soften it all a bit. It was way fun to paint.

I started this painting in the spring on location along the shores of the Hudson River in Cold Spring, New York. The lighting changed rapidly, and I was unable to finish it on location. I finally pulled it out and finished it from a photo that I took that morning.

I’ve been so busy with the house painters here that it’s been nearly impossible to get out to paint, and when I do, I can’t seem to find the time to take photos of the paintings and get them uploaded here. Today I went over to my friend Mary’s house and had a lovely late day mini-paintout with her in the back yard. This is a view facing her neighbor’s house. I loved the late day light hitting the tree, with the dark, heavily shaded background.

The purple and pink clouds over the Hudson River were stunning. I knew they would dissipate fast, so I put those in first, then did the rest of the painting. This painting was done on the property of The Brass Anchor in Poughkeepsie, NY.

This gorgeous statue stands before a reflecting pond in the Italian Gardens at the Vanderbilt Mansion property in Hyde Park, New York, surrounded by the garden’s exquisite brickwork. It’s one of my favorite places to paint. Even on an overcast day, I think you can see why!

Sailing in Florida is a miniature, ACEO size painting, done from a photo. When my husband saw the painting, he said he could imagine it framed on his desk for a mental vacation from time to time!

I have such a great time painting occasional ACEO size works. ACEO stands for Artist Cards Editions and Originals. They are collectible paintings in a standard, miniature format. The size is 2.5×3.5″, like baseball cards and playing cards. They are so enjoyable to paint and collect that every so often I do a few of them. Some artists sell prints of paintings in that size as ACEOs, but mine are always one-of-a-kind originals. ACEOs are truly fun to collect for those who love art. Everybody can find a place for these little gems. It’s an easy way to collect work from some favorite artists.

All the snow started melting today here in the northeast. I went to Leonard Park in Mt. Kisco, New York to do some painting. There is a lovely Chinese style pavillion there overlooking the pond. The ice was starting to melt as the sun peeked in and out of the clouds. It’s nice to finally get a little taste of spring!

This is one of my favorite trees along the lakeshore here by my house. The trunk and branches have so many interesting twists and turns, and the foliage turns a bright gold in late fall. I’ve been meaning to get out there to paint it in winter. I guess I’d better hurry up and do that before all the snow is gone!

When out painting landscapes on location (plein air), artists encounter issues with changing light and having to work fast. Sometimes paintings need little fixes in the studio, such as picking out pieces of leaves that fell off trees, bumping up a few highlights, or adjusting color/value in spots to account for viewing with indoor lighting. I have several paintings done on location that have been waiting patiently in the studio for small fixes of one kind or another.

This painting was done last spring in the Italian Gardens at the Vanderbilt Mansion in Hyde Park, New York, and has finally received a few touch-ups. The cherry blossoms there are nothing short of stunning. I can’t wait for late April to roll around so I can paint cherry blossoms from life again!

It was a gorgeous fall day at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation when I painted this on location, “en plein air”. One of the preserve managers lives in the house at the bottom of this hill. The red fall fields and views of the surrounding hills make this one of my favorite spots on the 4700 acre property. There is a paintable scene in every direction! They recently put in the bench by the tree, providing weary hikers with a perfect resting spot to view the serene landscape.

This is a 6×8″ compositional study in oils for a large painting I’m doing for the headquarters of Putnam County Land Trust, which is the building in the painting. (It used to be called Chickadee Haven by its former owner.) It abuts their 140 acre Peach Lake Natural Area. I felt like having a little color explosion today, so I did it using Charles Sovek’s cadmium orange/cerulean blue light/shadow underpainting. I always like the vibrancy and depth that combination yields. I’ll be doing the larger painting with more of a yellow/violet color harmony, rather than the orange/blue. I’ll be holding onto this painting until the larger one is completed so I can use it as a reference.

Here’s a little idea of how this was done. I started with a mix of cadmium orange and titanium white for the lights, and cerulean blue for the darks. All light areas were blocked in with the orange mixture, and darker areas with the blue:

All proceeds from the sale of this painting will be donated to Putnam Arts Council for the rebuilding of their Art Center and Galleries following the horrible fire on Sunday night.

I painted this interior scene from life while gallery sitting at the Belle Levine Gallery at Putnam Arts Council. Following the fire on Sunday night/Monday morning, this gallery space is no more. Having recently shown about 40 paintings here during the holiday season, it’s hard for me to believe it’s gone. It is such a terrible loss for Putnam County. The sculpture in the painting, “Hawk of the Hudson”, is by the wonderful sculptor Paul Yarden. It was made from driftwood found along the riverbank.

I had a couple of hours of free time while my daughter was at gymnastics, so I went over to my plein air buddy’s studio, which is near the gym, and did a couple of watercolor sketches. Sue and I paint outside all the time together, but not in the winter when it’s about five degrees out! It’s really fun to play with someone else’s still life stuff. She has this sweet brass pitcher that I loved painting. I’ve put it in a double mat, so it’s all ready to pop into any standard 8×10 frame.

It was my birthday a few days ago and my husband got me these gorgeous red sable, Escoda travel brushes, sizes 10 and 6. The brushes come apart and slip inside the tubes that double as handles. This watercolor sketch was my first test drive of the new brushes. I love them to bits! They fit right inside the pocket of my sketchbook cover too.
