This is another plein air painting done along the Hudson River from my favorite spot in Cold Spring, NY. I just can’t get enough of this location! Storm King Mountain is on the left, and Breakneck Ridge on the right, with Little Stony Point jutting out into the river. Watching the huge barges, tugs and beautiful sailboats pass through the middle could become a favorite pastime! The clouds were truly amazing in the morning, and the chroma was so strong that I had to pull out the phthalo blue to get the beautiful almost-turquoise color low in the sky.

This is a scene that I really wanted to paint on 9/11 on location, but it was raining. I did an ink and watercolor sketch of this barn with the flag years ago, and I’ve been meaning to go paint it ever since! It was worth the wait; the day was gorgeous.

Unfortunately, I just found out yesterday that the future of the farm, currently owned by Putnam County, is in jeopardy. This breaks my heart. It’s a gorgeous location, one of my favorite places to paint, and should definitely be remaining in public hands and open to us all!

I went up to Frederic Church’s estate, Olana, to paint and soak up some of that Hudson River School aura! This one was done sitting on the side steps of his mansion, just before sunset. It was cool and breezy, with the glow of the late day light overlooking the breathtaking Hudson view.

I’ve been so busy painting that I haven’t had a chance to photograph work and post! I just got home from the beautiful Ward Pound Ridge Reservation. The field grasses are glowing red, some of the leaves are starting to turn, and every view there was simply stunning. This is the old farmhouse on the property that now houses the offices and one of the galleries.

I just got in from a couple of days at Lake George, New York. What a beautiful place to relax and paint. I usually don’t get to paint much during family trips, but one morning when we were all at the beach, I pulled out my little pochade box and did this 5×7 under the shade of a nice, big beach umbrella.

I did get some great photos to work from one night when we went on a sunset cruise. We also drove up Prospect Mountain, which has 100 mile views, and took some pictures up there. So, there should be more Lake George paintings coming along in the near future. Stay tuned!

The Garden Club has been very busy dressing up the island with gorgeous annuals and perennials. This flower and vegetable garden below the residence castle has an exquisite view downriver. I painted it on location the other day in a vertical format, but I like this horizontal a lot better compositionally.

I’m starting to work from the photos I took at Bannerman’s Island on Friday. This was the very beginning of the excursion, as the boat circled the island before approaching the north shore. It’s a beautiful morning view as the light strikes the structures, and the still water made for vivid reflections. Someday I’d like to do a large painting of this scene. The large structure is the Bannerman Armory. The small structure on the right is one of the towers in the water, which was to be part of a large entrance bay to the island.

This is a second oil sketch that I did on location on Bannerman Island in the Hudson River yesterday. It was a real challenge with time consraints on such a complex subject. This is the remains of the castle residence at the peak of the island.

I tried to walk around the island as much as possible during the time I was there, both to take photos to work from and to do some paintings/sketches on location. I’m pleased with this one in many ways, and look forward to doing some more from this area of the island with this color reference and my photos. I may or may not go back into this painting and bring it to a more finished state.

Bannerman’s Island and the castle-like structures there are amazing sites in the middle of the Hudson River. They are a plein air painter’s dream. The island is currently owned by New York State, and access is prohibited except by special arrangement. A huge series of explosions on the island nearly leveled the buildings. The remains are barely standing and very dangerous—hence the need to limit access to the public. Today, Bannerman Castle Trust took me to the island for a day of plein air painting. I have a show at the Bannerman Island Gallery in October and will be selling some paintings of scenes on the island.

This is one of the oil sketches I did there today. It is the armory where Francis Bannerman kept his stash of munitions. I painted it sitting on the dock before it was time to leave. (It still needs a few tweaks to finish it up; I had to pack up to leave when the boat was ready to go!)

I’ll be keeping this one for awhile as a color reference so that I can do many more paintings from the photos I’ve taken and this plein air piece. Those will be for sale and I’ll post them as I do them. If you’d like a painting of this scene, please email me and let me know what size you’d like, and what medium you want it painted in.

This painting was done on location at Boscobel Restoration. It is the famous overview of Constitution Marsh and the Hudson River. I set up my easel in the cool shade under a big tree along the bluff. I think I’ve painted from this spot in nearly every season and every size. It occurred to me that I hadn’t done an 8×16″ summer view of the scene, so here it is for the very first time!

It was brutally hot today. I wanted to paint the Rockefeller Stone Barns, but couldn’t find a shady vantage point. I wandered around until I found a shady spot with picnic tables. There was a lovely view of this stunning oak tree beside a path and field, so I was able to enjoy some much-needed shade while painting.

It’s overcast and threatening to rain today, so I went through my Acadia National Park photos and selected this scene for today’s painting rather than venturing out to paint en plein air. It brought back wonderful memories of being up in Maine, wandering along the trails by the ocean.

This is gouache (opague watercolor) painted on 100% rag, archival Fabriano paper. It is matted in an ivory mat with a blue liner that shows off the blues in the painting and complements any decor. It’s all ready to pop into any standard 8×10 inch frame.

It was way too hot to be standing out in the sun doing this painting on location! My EasyL painting umbrella saved the day, though I was still pretty cooked by the time I was done. The late afternoon light against the side of the red building at Tilly Foster Farm made it glow red-orange.

This building is the current home of the Putnam Arts Council. They are renting the space from Putnam County while their old headquarters is being rebuilt following the terrible fire this past winter. The rolling fields, barns and pastures of Tilly Foster Farm are a perfect setting for artists!

This is the painting I did this morning for the Artists on Location event in Garrison, New York. I painted down by an inlet of the Hudson River along Fair Street in Cold Spring. It was much chillier than I’d anticipated, hence the pun in the title of “Cold Spring Morning”. I framed the painting in my car and drove back to the gallery to deliver it. I’m not sure how accurate the color is on this image, since I don’t have the painting to compare with the digital image. The paintings were auctioned off starting at 5pm. I had to go to my opening at the Bannerman Island Gallery in Beacon, so had to miss the live auction.

Tilly Foster Farm is an old horse farm that was purchased a few years ago by Putnam County to retain as open space. It has beautiful rolling fields, old buildings and barns, and a fantastic overview of miles and miles from the top of the pastures. This painting was done from a photo I took there in the fall.

Making a Multi-Media Sketchbook
I’ve made a number of sketchbooks over the years and have recently been asked to share some of them. This is perhaps the easiest, most useful, and most versatile of them all. The biggest advantages to this design are that many different kinds of paper can be used for various media and effects, plus the paper can be removed easily for framing.

Use any kind of cardboard, foamcore, illustration board, or matboard for your covers. I used scrap pieces of matboard that I had around the house and cut two pieces to the same size. Purchase some ringbinder rings in an office supply store. I got mine at Staples (very inexpensive). Holes were punched in the matboard for the rings:

Next, cut various types of paper that you like to use for painting, drawing, and sketching. Be sure to cut the paper about 1/2 inch smaller than the matboard. When in use, you’ll be doubling over the matboard to serve as a firm drawing board. The matboard edges also serve to protect the edges and corners of the paper. Punch holes in the paper, making sure they line up with the holes you’ve punched in the covers. You can paint your cover to decorate your sketchbook, but I just left mine blank.

If you use a lot of wet media, consider a piece of foamcore for one or both covers, coated with a couple of coats of acrylic medium, to use as a painting board. You can even tape paper down to it that way after removing a sheet from the book, or use metal office clips to hold it. Oil pastel and soft pastel artists can include sheets of glassine with holes punched, to place between finished drawings.

Glue a pocket to the inside of the front cover. (See image below.) I used this to hold templates for standard sizes. If you have, for instance, a 5×7″ template in the pocket, you can pull it out to draw a quick 5×7 rectangle on a piece of the paper. Then you’ll have a drawing or painting that will fit perfectly into a ready-made mat and frame. The little pocket also comes in handy for photo references, drawings, a ruler, etc. I put a sticker on the inside of the cover saying “If found please return to” with my name, address and phone number.

On the right side, the shiny plastic is a sheet of clear acetate. When working in colored pencil or graphite, I’d keep this under my hand to stop the pencil from smudging. I kept another sheet of it in the little pocket inside the cover. You can also keep glassine in the book, or whatever else you use to protect your finished work.

What an exquisite spring day we had. I met with a group of artist friends to paint at Teatown Lake Reservation in Ossining. The lake is best painted in spring before the foliage comes out. Once the trees and bushes leaf out, the lake views are obscured. Plus, the swans are there every spring and are good models! They have a nest near the bridge. I love this scene so much and have painted it many times. It presents lots of artistic challenges, so I go back every spring. Each year, I find I like my painting more than the year before. This one is my favorite from Teatown Lake so far.

This is a work in progress, painted today at the Orange County Arboretum. The painting fell into my palette as I was nearing the finish line. I spent nearly an hour scraping off piles of pure red, yellow, blue and white from the canvas and repainting damaged sections. The background muddied in the process and lightened from the accumulation of a substantial amount of titanium white that landed there in a big glob. It was not a pretty sight! I’ll have to wait until it tacks up a bit and will do some value adjusting and retouching. Then I’ll repost it and add the Paypal link. Until then, you get to see my “WIP” (work in progress).

I had high hopes that the sun was going to break through on my way over to Cold Spring to paint along the Hudson River at 7am this morning. I packed a bottle of iced tea and just wore a sweater. As I stood along the banks of the river, the clouds thickened and the cold wind picked up. I received a serious reality check, realizing that a warm spring day was merely wishful thinking.

This is a favorite spot of mine along the river. That rocky peak is Breakneck Ridge, and the finger of land jutting out is Little Stony Point.

This painting is done from a photo I took on an expedition to Little Cranberry Island off the coast of Maine. This weathered Maine boathouse was right on the shore of the bay. I’ve been wanting to paint this scene for a long time, and may do a larger version as well at some point.

If you haven’t yet begun a collection of “Jamie’s Jewels”, this is a perfect one to start you off in style! Remember too that Mother’s Day is coming. This would make an ideal gift and arrives in a little gold box. This one is slightly larger than my other recent micro paintings, by about 1/4″ (hence the slightly higher price tag).

This gorgeous statue stands before a reflecting pond in the Italian Gardens at the Vanderbilt Mansion property in Hyde Park, New York, surrounded by the garden’s exquisite brickwork. It’s one of my favorite places to paint. Even on an overcast day, I think you can see why!

Sailing in Florida is a miniature, ACEO size painting, done from a photo. When my husband saw the painting, he said he could imagine it framed on his desk for a mental vacation from time to time!

I have such a great time painting occasional ACEO size works. ACEO stands for Artist Cards Editions and Originals. They are collectible paintings in a standard, miniature format. The size is 2.5×3.5″, like baseball cards and playing cards. They are so enjoyable to paint and collect that every so often I do a few of them. Some artists sell prints of paintings in that size as ACEOs, but mine are always one-of-a-kind originals. ACEOs are truly fun to collect for those who love art. Everybody can find a place for these little gems. It’s an easy way to collect work from some favorite artists.

Who isn’t getting ready for their springtime gardening this time of year? I know I’m eager! The big open fields, old structures, gardens, and farm animals make it a delightful place to paint at any time of year.

This darling 4×4″ painting is the Chinese Friendship Pavillion at Lasdon Arboretum, in Somers NY. The strong reds of the structure stand out against the greens, with the deep blue sky reflecting in the water. This is painted in casein, which is an archival milk-based, artist quality medium, wonderful for its durability, strong color, quick drying, and mat finish. The painting was then varnished to give it a bit of sheen. I am including the little jeweled frame (shown below with the painting) at no extra charge, so that you can display it right away.

I started a large version of this scene on location some time ago, and it’s not quite finished. Seeing this image here, I realize how much I love this scene. I think I’ll spend tomorrow touching up the big one so that I can finally see that done. Come back again to see the 20×16″ oil painted version!

All the snow started melting today here in the northeast. I went to Leonard Park in Mt. Kisco, New York to do some painting. There is a lovely Chinese style pavillion there overlooking the pond. The ice was starting to melt as the sun peeked in and out of the clouds. It’s nice to finally get a little taste of spring!

This is one of my favorite trees along the lakeshore here by my house. The trunk and branches have so many interesting twists and turns, and the foliage turns a bright gold in late fall. When out painting landscapes on location (plein air), artists encounter issues with changing light and having to work fast. Sometimes paintings need little fixes in the studio, such as picking out pieces of leaves that fell off trees, bumping up a few highlights, or adjusting color/value in spots to account for viewing with indoor lighting. I have several paintings done on location that have been waiting patiently in the studio for small fixes of one kind or another.

This painting was done last spring in the Italian Gardens at the Vanderbilt Mansion in Hyde Park, New York, and has finally received a few touch-ups. The cherry blossoms there are nothing short of stunning. I can’t wait for late April to roll around so I can paint cherry blossoms from life again!

It was a gorgeous fall day at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation when I painted this on location, “en plein air”. One of the preserve managers lives in the house at the bottom of this hill. The red fall fields and views of the surrounding hills make this one of my favorite spots on the 4700 acre property. There is a paintable scene in every direction! They recently put in the bench by the tree, providing weary hikers with a perfect resting spot to view the serene landscape.

This is a 6×8″ compositional study in oils for a large painting I’m doing for the headquarters of Putnam County Land Trust, which is the building in the painting. (It used to be called Chickadee Haven by its former owner.) It abuts their 140 acre Peach Lake Natural Area. I felt like having a little color explosion today, so I did it using Charles Sovek’s cadmium orange/cerulean blue light/shadow underpainting. I always like the vibrancy and depth that combination yields. I’ll be doing the larger painting with more of a yellow/violet color harmony, rather than the orange/blue. I’ll be holding onto this painting until the larger one is completed so I can use it as a reference.

Here’s a little idea of how this was done. I started with a mix of cadmium orange and titanium white for the lights, and cerulean blue for the darks. All light areas were blocked in with the orange mixture, and darker areas with the blue:

I looked out the window this morning and there was a beautiful sunrise of subdued violets and yellows over the lake. I wasn’t yet set up to paint, and knew that what I was seeing would vanish long before I had a chance to lay out palette and get my brushes. Rather than skip painting a sunrise, I went through photos I’d taken of the view in previous winters. I came across one I’d been meaning to paint for a long time, and spent the morning having a wonderful time doing this painting.

Tomorrow morning, I’ll have to make sure I’m set up earlier to catch it in the moment!

When we were in Maine last summer, we went for a sunset sail on the four-masted schooner Margaret Todd. We lucked out with a spectacular sunset. I took oodles of photos, including the one of this boat sailing nearby. Every time he tacked, the light would catch the sails from a different direction. I was so glad to have my camera along!

I got up extra early to finish the painting this morning. I’m going to be offline for a few days after this post, but I’ll see y’all back here on Tuesday.

This 3×5″ plein air casein painting is beautifully framed and ready to hang on your wall. Casein is an archival, non-soluble (when dry) milk-based medium with brilliant color and a matt finish. It looks similar to oils but without the slight gloss, and like oils, the paint does not lift. It is a wonderful and underused medium that is experiencing a resurgence in popularity, and with good reason!

One evening when the sunset was spectacular, my husband and I drove to the other side of the lake to take pictures. This group of people was just setting out in their boat to enjoy the last of a quiet summer evening.Below is the pochade box that I often use for these small paintings, with just the first layer of paint on the panel. The glass palette slides to the side to access the paints and supplies below. I secure the painting panel to a slightly larger board because with a painting this small, once I get to this stage, I hold it in my hand while painting. Taping it to the larger panel enables me to hold it without getting paint all over my hands.

I finally was able to snatch some plein air time today. Hooray! It was one of those spectacular fall days, with the warmth and sunshine you didn’t think you’d find again until spring. I dropped my daughter at gymnastics and headed for a nearby park to take in some rays and test drive my new pochade box.

I hear those giggles among those who know me. “Another pochade box?”, they’re asking. I already have one for oils (which is a little bigger and supports larger panels) and one that I made for gouache. I plan to use this new one for “stealth painting”. heeheehee… It’s so small, and I’ve filled it with watersoluble oils so that I can just use whatever water I have on hand for painting in cafes, my car, or even the kitchen, with no worry about fumes or toxic substances, and no need to carry oil or turp.

Here’s an image of the painting still in the box. You can see there’s a hinged lip at the top of the part that holds the panel securely in place, so that you can slide the panel in and out. The box will hold one 6×8″ panel horizontally, and keeps it separated from the paints so that I can travel with the wet, completed painting.

The palette itself is actually wood, but I covered it with white contact paper for easier cleanup, and because I prefer to mix colors on a white surface. I find it hard to judge the colors and values of my dark, transparent mixes on a dark wood palette. The white contact paper worked out great. It wipes clean easily with a palette knife and rag, and if it gets tattered down the road, I can just peel it off and recover. As shown below, the palette slides to the left, giving easy access to the box’s storage compartments.

Here’s another view of how I packed up my box. I had to cut the handles off some of the brushes so that they’d fit. Underneath that rag is a thumb hole for supporting the box while standing.

For those looking for a small box like this, I give this one pretty high marks. It is sold by Utrecht, and made by Jullian. It is very reasonably priced, and comes with an adjustable leather shoulder strap too.

Fall Reflections was painted from a photo I took at Muscoot Farm in Somers, NY. I’m mainly a plein air painter and haven’t worked much from pictures, but I take photos wherever I go to paint. Over the years, I’ve accumulated thousands of photos that I have yet to paint from! It’s been fun to dig some of them out at last, and paint the scenes I envisioned on canvas years ago, but never got around to painting. I’ve always wanted to do a painting that featured reflections like this, with fall leaves floating on the top of the water. This was a lot of fun to paint, and I’m eager to have a go at a similar subject en plein air soon, perhaps at the brook behind my house.

When I work from photos, I prefer to paint directly off the computer screen, rather than printing them out. The color is much better, and I can crop the image, move it around, enlarge and reduce at will. I can even rotate both the image on the screen and the painting, and work on them both upside down! Here is my initial setup. You can see that I secured the small canvas board to a larger board to make it easier to work with. That way, I can hold the board in my hand, paint right to the edges, and rotate it easily. The canvas is toned a greyed violet, since I saw that as the optimum background for this particular painting. I added a touch of liquin and used an alkyd white to get it to tack up a little faster, knowing I’d want to do a lot of layering alla prima for this painting.

I selected just four colors for this piece (though additional colors are on the palette). I used cadmium yellow lemon, cadmium red medium, ultramarine blue deep, and transparent red oxide, plus of course titanium white. I blocked in the reflections and placement of the grasses, and worked that stage until it was completely finished.

Here’s another image of the still-incomplete painting. After the colors were down, I swept a brush side to side to show movement in the water. Most of the work with the reflections and color was then complete:

Once the painting was at the stage above, I let it set up for a half hour so the paint wouldn’t be so slippery, then went back and added in the leaves floating in the water, and the definition of the grasses at the top, tweaked it here and there, and signed it. Done!

Today was the bi-annual Artists on Location day in Garrison, NY. 85 artists contribute paintings to be auctioned at the Garrison Art Center. Most submit paintings for the silent auction only, but plein air painters can also go out today and paint on location, return by 3pm with their framed plein air paintings, and have those in a live auction in the evening.

I arrived at 8:30 am and submitted a painting for the silent auction, then drove to a nearby location to paint along the Hudson River. It was freezing cold out! Wimp that I am, I painted this 5×7 from inside my car parked at the scene, took some photos of it, put it into a frame, took another pic of it framed, and delivered it back to the gallery at the art center.

Unfortunately, my camera jammed. The only photo that downloaded was this one of the painting framed behind glass, with all the glare and reflections that entails. You can even see the image of the camera reflecting in the painting. Grrrr! I hate it when that happens!

Another beautiful sunrise to paint on location! All the mornings have been like this lately, with dense fog over Peach Lake, which burns off as the sun comes up.

I met with my friend Sue to paint at the lakeshore this morning. The lake was covered with a thick morning fog, so I went inside for more coffee and returned as the remaining haze started to burn off. The trees were crisp and brilliant, with strong contrasts, and the remaining fog blanketed the background over the lake, partially obscuring the far shore. What a sight. Then I realized that I’d forgotten to bring my oil painting pochade box. I didn’t feel like setting up a big french easel for a small painting, so I pulled out my gouache box which I happened to have with me, and painted in gouache instead.

Every time I paint in gouache I wonder why I don’t do it more often. I adore this medium. It has the blendability/opacity benefits of oils, with the water solubility of watercolor, the crispness of acrylic, and the archival characteristics of the very best art mediums (if one chooses their pigments carefully, which I always do). It dries quickly to a nice, matt finish so it’s easy to photograph, can be sent out immediately, and is simple to frame.

I’m fortunate enough to live on a lake, and ran out to paint a quick sunset with a painting friend from out of town. There was goldenrod blooming all over the shoreline (which, by the way, I seem to be allergic to)! Tomorrow morning I’m supposed to paint the sunrise with another friend. We’ll see if I can haul myself out of bed early enough on a weekend!
