This is another painting of a scene from Boscobel Restoration along the Hudson River in Garrison, NY. I started it on location last spring. I thought it was about time I pulled this out and finished it up, with spring on the way soon! I’m having a wonderful time pulling out these paintings that I never quite finished. As time passes, our ideas simmer and develop. It’s been great to now infuse these works with my current thoughts on color, value, and paint application.

This was painted from the front porch of my friend Cathy’s house. She has a fabulous view of the distant hills, and the foreground tree was lit up against the dark hillside. The tops of the grasses and goldenrod on the field were illuminated by the strong morning light, and popped against the deep shadows.

I did some sketching today and haven’t had a chance to photograph any of them, so I’m bumping up this painting for those who haven’t seen it yet. It’s one of my favorites from the fall.

This painting began en plein air at the Mills Mansion property along the Hudson River. I finished it up in the studio today from photos taken on location. It’s a spectacular view, with the blue Catskill Mountains way in the distance, and the Esopus Lighthouse catching the light and shimmering above the Hudson River.

Since I’m still sick, I am bumping up a painting of one of my favorite trees along the Hudson River to share with my viewers. It’s become hidden in the depths of my blog, so I’m happy to pull it up to the top again where it can be seen. I did some sketches today, but don’t have the energy to get into the workshop to take pictures of them and do the uploading.

This was painted on a warm, sunny fall day. I took advantage of it by driving over to Garrison and painting my favorite tree along the Hudson River. It is just opposite West Point Military Academy. Fortunately for me, the tree still had leaves, though it was already November!

This painting is already dry and varnished, so it’s ready to send and would make a great gift!

My painting buddy, Suhua Wood, found this amazing spot along the Hudson River in Cold Spring for us to paint! I started this painting on location a few weeks ago, but didn’t have enough time to finish it there. I finally finished it up from a photo.

I took pictures of the various stages as I painted. First I underpainted with Golden Fluid Acrylics, using Transparent Red Oxide for all but the lightest areas. Some light areas then got a wash of Transparent Yellow Oxide, and cool darks got some Ultramarine Blue.

I pulled out some heavier bodied acrylics, and laid in the sky and water. You can see an image of my scene and setup here as I was working.

Then I started working with the local colors I saw. The image below shows how much I completed on location, and how far I still had to go.

I used a photo of the scene to finish up the painting, in combination with the information already there from having worked on location. Being able to do even a portion of the piece en plein air always makes a difference in the outcome.

This was painted on location from Cold Spring, New York, along the shore of the Hudson River. Crow’s Nest Mountain is actually 42 feet higher than neighboring Storm King, but doesn’t get as much of the publicity. The moon was setting over the cliffs, presenting an irresistible scene. I thought I’d show a demo of my process, so I took some photos along the way.

I started by mixed up a painting “medium” of Golden Acrylic Flow Release in a ratio of 1:10 with water, poured some of that into a little palette cup, and added about 25% Golden Acrylic Glazing Liquid (Gloss). I used that to dilute paint for my underpainting, so as not to underbind the paint, and to help the flow of the color.

I began drawing in a couple of lines with heavily diluted Transparent Red Oxide. Once the placement lines were in, I started blocking in darks with thicker paint, and used thinner washes on the midtones. Then I used Transparent Yellow Oxide over the light areas (except for the sky). Areas of this photo appear blue due to sky reflection; those areas are actually white.

Next, I pulled out some Ultramarine blue, and used that combined with the transparent yellow and red oxides to block in cool darks and start a green wash on the foreground. Adding Titanium white and just a dash of phthalo blue to the ultramarine, I blocked in the sky and some sky holes in the tree.

Below is a photo of the painting on my easel, with the scene in the background, so you can see what I was working on. Compositionally, I’d have needed a wider canvas to fit in these elements if I wanted to keep everything to scale. Instead, I compressed the scene, shortening the width of the mountain, and bringing the moon over and down toward the peak. (You can just barely see the moon in the photo of the scene, in the upper right corner.)

I added Hansa Yellow Opaque and Napthol Red to my palette, and started working on the local color. I wanted to bring out the warm tones in the cliffs, so started putting in the pinks and violets early on. The red underpainting helped with that, as well as giving that orangy fall atmosphere. Here it is at the “almost done” point:

Lastly, I added cooler colors to the cliff face and did a once-over throughout the painting, adding finishing touches and making adjustments.

This was painted high on a hilltop above the Hudson River, behind the Vanderbilt Mansion in Hyde Park. I was really hoping to paint down by the river, but when I arrived at the location, I learned that the road has been closed all season for repairs. Although that was a huge disappoinment, I found this beautiful spot behind the mansion from which to paint the little red boathouse that I love to put into my paintings from Hyde Park. Pretty soon, all that beautiful fall foliage will be gone!

This was painted on location at Bannerman’s Island along the shorline by the Wee Bay. Zack, who works on maintaining the grounds there, told me he’d just cut down brush in this area, and it might make for a great painting location. He was right! The skies had cleared a bit by then, so I even had some sunshine at last.

Here is another plein air painting from the wonderful Bannerman Island. This is the view downriver from the castle residence ruins at the peak of the island. It is quite a striking Hudson River view from up there! The skies were threatening and overcast, but it didn’t rain. When the little tug boat and huge barge went by, I snatched the opportunity and painted them in. They are so tiny next to the enormous mountains!

Here’s a photo of my setup on top of the castle ruins, before I started painting. I love using my little, featherweight pochade box for these small works. It’s about the only way to get around the island and paint.

A portion of the sale of this painting goes to Bannerman Castle Trust, which maintains the island and its structures, and undertakes renovation projects there. They also conduct guided tours to the island by boat, which can be booked through the gallery. Public access is not otherwise permitted because the structures are too dangerous.

There has been a lot of interest in my acrylics on watercolor paper, so Bannerman Castle Trust took me out to Bannerman’s Island by boat to paint more for the gallery! It’s a tough job, but somebody’s got to do it. *big grin* I always have the time of my life when I go out there to paint, and this time was no exception!

To give you an idea of how tough it can be to get around parts of the island, here’s a picture of where I was when I painted this painting. I had to lug my equipment up the slope, and then down this side, then back up again. I initially set my chair where you see it here, but then moved it down to where I took this picture from, for the better vantage point closer to the water.

This is my painting from yesterday’s Artists on Location event in Garrison, New York. It’s a terrible photo; the sky is really not cyan, and the water is more muted in the actual painting. I had to take the photo in my car before I delivered the painting. That threw the colors all out of whack. The painting sold at the auction, so I won’t have a chance to get a better photo.

It was freezing cold yesterday morning, so I parked my car at the Riverview Restaurant’s lot in Cold Spring and painted from the passenger seat, using my little pochade painting box! They have a fabulous view of the Hudson River and Storm King Mountain. Unfortunately, there is a sewage treatment plant next door, but whipping out my Creative License, I turned that back into the nice grassy field that it used to be. I left in the train tracks, which run up along the Hudson to Poughkeepsie.

Many thanks to everybody who came out to Ward Pound Ridge Reservation today for our second show reception and to see us paint! The building with the gallery where our show is has a nice view of the little “toll booth” on the preserve where the parking fees are collected. The trees beyond were at peak fall performance, and the fields were ablaze with pink grasses. It provided the perfect fall subject to paint while chatting with visitors to the show.

Where are the grape vines, you’re wondering? That little green tree is totally engulfed in the vines! Although I know it’s bad for the tree, I love the way they droop over the branches so gracefully.

Today I participated in Barrett Art Center’s Rhinebeck paintout. I went up to Frederic Church’s estate, Olana, to enjoy the beautiful weather and soak up some of his inspiration. I loved the way the tree framed the building, and the way the shadows cast on the side of the mansion and foreground made the light yellow glow.

I finished two paintings at Olana today. I’ll post the other one tomorrow. Both sold this evening.

This morning I drove down to the Marshlands Conservancy on Long Island Sound in Rye, New York, and spent the morning with the cool breeze blowing and my bare feet in the warm sand. I don’t think I’ve been here for over 20 years, but I sure am going to revisit very soon! The smell of the salt air and the serenity, combined with fabulous views, are truly plein air heaven!

This is another plein air painting done along the Hudson River from my favorite spot in Cold Spring, NY. I just can’t get enough of this location! Storm King Mountain is on the left, and Breakneck Ridge on the right, with Little Stony Point jutting out into the river. Watching the huge barges, tugs and beautiful sailboats pass through the middle could become a favorite pastime! The clouds were truly amazing in the morning, and the chroma was so strong that I had to pull out the phthalo blue to get the beautiful almost-turquoise color low in the sky.

I went up to Frederic Church’s estate, Olana, to paint and soak up some of that Hudson River School aura! This one was done sitting on the side steps of his mansion, just before sunset. It was cool and breezy, with the glow of the late day light overlooking the breathtaking Hudson view.

I’ve been so busy painting that I haven’t had a chance to photograph work and post! I just got home from the beautiful Ward Pound Ridge Reservation. The field grasses are glowing red, some of the leaves are starting to turn, and every view there was simply stunning. This is the old farmhouse on the property that now houses the offices and one of the galleries.

I just got in from a couple of days at Lake George, New York. What a beautiful place to relax and paint. I usually don’t get to paint much during family trips, but one morning when we were all at the beach, I pulled out my little pochade box and did this 5×7 under the shade of a nice, big beach umbrella.

I did get some great photos to work from one night when we went on a sunset cruise. We also drove up Prospect Mountain, which has 100 mile views, and took some pictures up there. So, there should be more Lake George paintings coming along in the near future. Stay tuned!

This is a second oil sketch that I did on location on Bannerman Island in the Hudson River yesterday. It was a real challenge with time consraints on such a complex subject. This is the remains of the castle residence at the peak of the island.

I tried to walk around the island as much as possible during the time I was there, both to take photos to work from and to do some paintings/sketches on location. I’m pleased with this one in many ways, and look forward to doing some more from this area of the island with this color reference and my photos. I may or may not go back into this painting and bring it to a more finished state.

Bannerman’s Island and the castle-like structures there are amazing sites in the middle of the Hudson River. They are a plein air painter’s dream. The island is currently owned by New York State, and access is prohibited except by special arrangement. A huge series of explosions on the island nearly leveled the buildings. The remains are barely standing and very dangerous—hence the need to limit access to the public. Today, Bannerman Castle Trust took me to the island for a day of plein air painting. I have a show at the Bannerman Island Gallery in October and will be selling some paintings of scenes on the island.

This is one of the oil sketches I did there today. It is the armory where Francis Bannerman kept his stash of munitions. I painted it sitting on the dock before it was time to leave. (It still needs a few tweaks to finish it up; I had to pack up to leave when the boat was ready to go!)

I’ll be keeping this one for awhile as a color reference so that I can do many more paintings from the photos I’ve taken and this plein air piece. Those will be for sale and I’ll post them as I do them. If you’d like a painting of this scene, please email me and let me know what size you’d like, and what medium you want it painted in.

This painting was done on location at Boscobel Restoration. It is the famous overview of Constitution Marsh and the Hudson River. I set up my easel in the cool shade under a big tree along the bluff. I think I’ve painted from this spot in nearly every season and every size. It occurred to me that I hadn’t done an 8×16″ summer view of the scene, so here it is for the very first time!

It was way too hot to be standing out in the sun doing this painting on location! My EasyL painting umbrella saved the day, though I was still pretty cooked by the time I was done. The late afternoon light against the side of the red building at Tilly Foster Farm made it glow red-orange.

This building is the current home of the Putnam Arts Council. They are renting the space from Putnam County while their old headquarters is being rebuilt following the terrible fire this past winter. The rolling fields, barns and pastures of Tilly Foster Farm are a perfect setting for artists!

I started this painting in the spring on location along the shores of the Hudson River in Cold Spring, New York. The lighting changed rapidly, and I was unable to finish it on location. I finally pulled it out and finished it from a photo that I took that morning.

From up high at the top of the pastures, there is a magnificent overview of the farm, barn, reservoir, and distant hills. This was painted on location there. It was a challenging scene and I almost didn’t take it on, but the view was irresistible.

I had high hopes that the sun was going to break through on my way over to Cold Spring to paint along the Hudson River at 7am this morning. I packed a bottle of iced tea and just wore a sweater. As I stood along the banks of the river, the clouds thickened and the cold wind picked up. I received a serious reality check, realizing that a warm spring day was merely wishful thinking.

This is a favorite spot of mine along the river. That rocky peak is Breakneck Ridge, and the finger of land jutting out is Little Stony Point.

When out painting landscapes on location (plein air), artists encounter issues with changing light and having to work fast. Sometimes paintings need little fixes in the studio, such as picking out pieces of leaves that fell off trees, bumping up a few highlights, or adjusting color/value in spots to account for viewing with indoor lighting. I have several paintings done on location that have been waiting patiently in the studio for small fixes of one kind or another.

This painting was done last spring in the Italian Gardens at the Vanderbilt Mansion in Hyde Park, New York, and has finally received a few touch-ups. The cherry blossoms there are nothing short of stunning. I can’t wait for late April to roll around so I can paint cherry blossoms from life again!

It was a gorgeous fall day at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation when I painted this on location, “en plein air”. One of the preserve managers lives in the house at the bottom of this hill. The red fall fields and views of the surrounding hills make this one of my favorite spots on the 4700 acre property. There is a paintable scene in every direction! They recently put in the bench by the tree, providing weary hikers with a perfect resting spot to view the serene landscape.

This 3×5″ plein air casein painting is beautifully framed and ready to hang on your wall. Casein is an archival, non-soluble (when dry) milk-based medium with brilliant color and a matt finish. It looks similar to oils but without the slight gloss, and like oils, the paint does not lift. It is a wonderful and underused medium that is experiencing a resurgence in popularity, and with good reason!

Today was the bi-annual Artists on Location day in Garrison, NY. 85 artists contribute paintings to be auctioned at the Garrison Art Center. Most submit paintings for the silent auction only, but plein air painters can also go out today and paint on location, return by 3pm with their framed plein air paintings, and have those in a live auction in the evening.

I arrived at 8:30 am and submitted a painting for the silent auction, then drove to a nearby location to paint along the Hudson River. It was freezing cold out! Wimp that I am, I painted this 5×7 from inside my car parked at the scene, took some photos of it, put it into a frame, took another pic of it framed, and delivered it back to the gallery at the art center.

Unfortunately, my camera jammed. The only photo that downloaded was this one of the painting framed behind glass, with all the glare and reflections that entails. You can even see the image of the camera reflecting in the painting. Grrrr! I hate it when that happens!

About six or seven of us from the Lower Hudson Valley Plein Air Painters were there enjoying what just might prove to be the last really warm day of fall. I’ve painted this Hudson River scene on location in just about every size in every season, but I don’t think I’ve ever done a 5×7 with this tree in it. So, here it is!

I’m fortunate enough to live on a lake, and ran out to paint a quick sunset with a painting friend from out of town. There was goldenrod blooming all over the shoreline (which, by the way, I seem to be allergic to)! Tomorrow morning I’m supposed to paint the sunrise with another friend. We’ll see if I can haul myself out of bed early enough on a weekend!
