I rented it from Netflix and absolutely loved it. It is an enactment of the lives of Monet, Renoir, Manet, Cezanne, Degas, and other Impressionist painters living at that time around Paris. Fascinating and eye-opening!

Here are yet more spring flowers and trees from Boscobel Restoration in Garrison, NY. This was painted on location in the garden courtyard.

This is another painting done this week from the Boscobel overlook to the Hudson River. The channels wind through Constitution Marsh, and the spring foliage is still sparse enough to clearly see them between the islands of violet-toned grasses. It’s a spectacular view in any season.

Today was one of those unexpected “bonus” days. It was supposed to be rainy and cold, but turned out to be warm and sunny! I packed up my gear and headed to Boscobel. I even remembered to bring my camera this time, so I’ve got lots of photo references of the gorgeous blooms to work from when the rain starts.

It’s too bad the blossoms are so short-lived, because I could paint these flowering trees overlooking the river for a couple of months without getting tired of them!

Spring from the Studio Window ACEO

As a step along the path to curing my funk, I decided I’d do something “just for fun” today. Again it was raining out—a true northeast spring. Normally I’d sketch or paint in my sketchbook for fun, but I decided this time to do an ACEO-size painting (click here if you don’t know what that is) from my studio window. I had such a great time, and love this little painting to bits!

The image above is much larger than the actual painting. Depending on the size of your monitor and your screen resolution, the painting as shown below is probably closer to the real size. At this small size, it really shows how much detail the painting has. Isn’t it adorable? By the way, you can get standard size frames for these at Michael’s Arts and Crafts and other stores. They also look great on little table easels.

This was painted at Muscoot Farm, Somers, NY, in the Hudson Valley. The forsythia was so colorful against the red barn that I had to stop in my tracks and paint it. The fields at Muscoot are newly plowed and all the animals were out enjoying the spring sunshine.

One of the nicest things about the Constitution Marsh overview from Boscobel at this time of year is that the foreground foliage doesn’t obscure so much of the marsh. I really enjoyed being able to paint a couple of vertical compositions there this week, instead of the usual horizontal Hudson River views that we usually see from this vantage point. With the day being heavily overcast, I searched for a strong composition to make a convincing painting.

When I arrived at the Hudson Riverfront this morning, it was totally fogged in and I couldn’t see anything but this tree and picnic bench! I decided to paint that while waiting for the fog to burn off. It lifted as I was painting, revealing the striking cliffs of the palisades on the far shore, so I had to put that into the painting!

It didn’t look like the clouds were going to break today, but I decided to take a chance and drove down to Teatown Lake Reservation in Ossining, New York. The sun was in and out, but it did peek through long enough to light up the scene for me a few times. The swans are back there nesting on the other side of the bridge, and one would swim under the bridge past me, and back again, every so often. The last time he swam by, I was just finishing up the painting. It was the perfect time to put him in!

I paint this scene every spring, but usually from the other side. I’ll be going back again next week, so there’s still a chance for me to do my usual vantage point. There are a few scenes that I like to paint every year. They serve as a sort of barometer for me as the years go by. I can see changes in style, color, and ability as the years go by. I’ve always found this scene extremely challenging, which is why I like to paint it every year.

This morning was dull and overcast along the Hudson River at Boscobel Restoration, but later in the morning, the sun broke to the north. I faced the sunny side to do this painting, while the color was still grey to the south. Constitution Marsh is still rather brown. Most of the spring color has yet to emerge up here.

This oil painting of a red barge on the Hudson River was done on location at the Vanderbilt Mansion property in Hyde Park, New York last year. There is so much to paint there! It is one of my favorite places to paint along the Hudson. The painting is dry, varnished, and ready for a frame!

Some days just get too hectic to paint. I’ve been very busy framing and varnishing, so it’s a good opportunity to show something that hasn’t appeared on my blog for a long time.

I’m really looking forward to the change of seasons and getting back up to Hyde Park to take in the cherry blossoms in the Italian Gardens!

This is another painting of a scene from Boscobel Restoration along the Hudson River in Garrison, NY. I started it on location last spring. I thought it was about time I pulled this out and finished it up, with spring on the way soon! I’m having a wonderful time pulling out these paintings that I never quite finished. As time passes, our ideas simmer and develop. It’s been great to now infuse these works with my current thoughts on color, value, and paint application.

I saw these tiny stretched canvases in an art supply store. They were just too cute to resist! I painted this sailboat and sunset from a photo I took when I was up in Bar Harbor, Maine. The painting will be shipped to you in a gold gift box, and with the mini easel. The nickel is there for size reference so you can see how tiny it is! This would make a perfect gift for your favorite sailor, or anybody who loves Bar Harbor and Maine as much as I do!

Here’s another image of it from the sides, so you can see the depth of the stretchers. I painted the sides with black acrylic. It looks really sharp!

This is a the headquarters of Putnam County Land Trust. It will be housed permanently over the fireplace in the building. The Land Trust has been renovating this building for years, and the painting will be unveiled at the grand opening in the spring. PCLT owns about 140 acres here. A local resident, with property bordering the preserve, left her house to the Land Trust in her will, to be used as a headquarters and for educational purposes.

This site is only about a half mile from me, so I’m very excited about doing this painting for the Land Trust!

Below are various stages of the painting in progress.

This is another painting of the little brook that runs behind my house. I sketched it in the morning light from the kitchen window, which overlooks the scene. This acrylic painting was done from a photo I took of a frozen pond in Somers, New York. I’d done a watercolor painting of the scene on location in my sketchbook, and was so captivated by the scene that I had to do it again in a form that could be framed. The painting is 4.5×3″, mounted to a backing board and double matted to 5×7″ as shown below. It will fit into any standard 5×7″ picture frame.

I love the lead-in of this path overlooking the pond on the Open Land Foundation property in North Salem, New York. It’s a scene that begs to be painted. This beautiful property on the south side of Baxter Road was saved from development by the horse-lovers in the area. It is now a favorite local spot for horseback riders, dog walkers, and sometimes painters!

I have such fond memories of painting here behind the Jordan Pond house during summer vacations. This past summer was the first time in many years that we did not get up to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park, on Mount Dessert Island. I missed it a lot. Since I couldn’t paint there this summer, I decided to pull out some photos today to paint the beautiful Bubble mountains overlooking Jordan Pond.

My palette for this painting was:

Fall Morning in Cold Spring on the Hudson River and demo

My painting buddy, Suhua Wood, found this amazing spot along the Hudson River in Cold Spring for us to paint! I started this painting on location a few weeks ago, but didn’t have enough time to finish it there. I finally finished it up from a photo.

I took pictures of the various stages as I painted. First I underpainted with Golden Fluid Acrylics, using Transparent Red Oxide for all but the lightest areas. Some light areas then got a wash of Transparent Yellow Oxide, and cool darks got some Ultramarine Blue.

071203-fall-morning-in-cold-spring-12×12-wip1-500.jpg

I pulled out some heavier bodied acrylics, and laid in the sky and water. You can see an image of my scene and setup here as I was working.

071203-fall-morning-in-cold-spring-12×12-wip2-400.jpg

Then I started working with the local colors I saw. The image below shows how much I completed on location, and how far I still had to go.

071203-fall-morning-in-cold-spring-12×12-wip3-400.jpg

I used a photo of the scene to finish up the painting, in combination with the information already there from having worked on location. Being able to do even a portion of the piece en plein air always makes a difference in the outcome.

This little painting was done from a photo that I took at the Marshlands Conservancy in Rye. Sometimes there just isn’t time on location to paint all the beautiful scenes I see! Thank goodness for cameras at those times, so that I can paint them later. Photos never capture the brilliance of being on location, but I rely on my plein air paintings and my memories of the light and color to try and complete what the photos leave out.

This was painted high on a hilltop above the Hudson River, behind the Vanderbilt Mansion in Hyde Park. I was really hoping to paint down by the river, but when I arrived at the location, I learned that the road has been closed all season for repairs. Although that was a huge disappoinment, I found this beautiful spot behind the mansion from which to paint the little red boathouse that I love to put into my paintings from Hyde Park. Pretty soon, all that beautiful fall foliage will be gone!

Here is another plein air painting from the wonderful Bannerman Island. This is the view downriver from the castle residence ruins at the peak of the island. It is quite a striking Hudson River view from up there! The skies were threatening and overcast, but it didn’t rain. When the little tug boat and huge barge went by, I snatched the opportunity and painted them in. They are so tiny next to the enormous mountains!

Here’s a photo of my setup on top of the castle ruins, before I started painting. I love using my little, featherweight pochade box for these small works. It’s about the only way to get around the island and paint.

A portion of the sale of this painting goes to Bannerman Castle Trust, which maintains the island and its structures, and undertakes renovation projects there. They also conduct guided tours to the island by boat, which can be booked through the gallery. Public access is not otherwise permitted because the structures are too dangerous.

This is my painting from yesterday’s Artists on Location event in Garrison, New York. It’s a terrible photo; the sky is really not cyan, and the water is more muted in the actual painting. I had to take the photo in my car before I delivered the painting. That threw the colors all out of whack. The painting sold at the auction, so I won’t have a chance to get a better photo.

It was freezing cold yesterday morning, so I parked my car at the Riverview Restaurant’s lot in Cold Spring and painted from the passenger seat, using my little pochade painting box! They have a fabulous view of the Hudson River and Storm King Mountain. Unfortunately, there is a sewage treatment plant next door, but whipping out my Creative License, I turned that back into the nice grassy field that it used to be. I left in the train tracks, which run up along the Hudson to Poughkeepsie.

Here’s a pic of the framed painting, as it was delivered to the gallery (photo color still off). You can click on this one to see a larger image. Can you find the sailboat in the painting?

This was painted from a photo I took at the Open Land Foundation in North Salem a week or so ago. It’s been rainy all week, so I had to resort to a photo to paint this landscape. I was drawn to the bright green field through the shadowed trees, with light falling on the path in the early morning.

I had such a wonderful time when I was down at the Marshlands Conservancy in Rye a couple of weeks ago. The weather was perfect, and there were gorgeous views and scenes to paint everywhere I looked. Fortunately, I took a lot of photos while I was there, because I couldn’t possibly paint every view I saw that day on location. I put one up on my computer monitor to paint this scene.

This is a terrible photo of my second painting that sold last night following the Rhinebeck Paintout. I had to take the photo with a flash and dismal lighting. The color of the sky and background hills is waaaaay off! In spite of the bad photo, I did want to be able to at least show an idea of what my other painting looked like.

I love this view from Olana looking toward the Catskills. If there’d been a more dramatic sky yesterday, I’d have done a vertical format instead, or a lower horizon that featured more sky. The tall, relatively narrow tree has a wonderful shape, but showcasing the top of the tree would have left nothing happening on the other side of the painting on this clear, nearly-cloudless day. Cutting out much of the sky showcases the background mountains to draw us into the painting. Many thanks to my buyers from last night for sharing my love of the Hudson Valley in art.

Today I participated in Barrett Art Center’s Rhinebeck paintout. I went up to Frederic Church’s estate, Olana, to enjoy the beautiful weather and soak up some of his inspiration. I loved the way the tree framed the building, and the way the shadows cast on the side of the mansion and foreground made the light yellow glow.

I finished two paintings at Olana today. I’ll post the other one tomorrow. Both sold this evening.

The castle remains on Bannerman’s Island tower above the Hudson River like something out of a movie. While plein air painting on Bannerman’s Island, I took lots of photos of the views and castle ruins to work from in the studio. This is a view of the Armory side entrance from the path above. The painting is a diminutive 2.75″ square, and sits perfectly on the easel to liven up any spot in your home with a piece of Hudson River history. The canvas edges are painted gold as shown below, for the gem-like quality that these miniatures evoke.

Although small, these minis take as much time to paint as their larger counterparts. I love the way they look and the charm of the small scale.

This is a scene that I really wanted to paint on 9/11 on location, but it was raining. I did an ink and watercolor sketch of this barn with the flag years ago, and I’ve been meaning to go paint it ever since! It was worth the wait; the day was gorgeous.

Unfortunately, I just found out yesterday that the future of the farm, currently owned by Putnam County, is in jeopardy. This breaks my heart. It’s a gorgeous location, one of my favorite places to paint, and should definitely be remaining in public hands and open to us all!

I just got in from a couple of days at Lake George, New York. What a beautiful place to relax and paint. I usually don’t get to paint much during family trips, but one morning when we were all at the beach, I pulled out my little pochade box and did this 5×7 under the shade of a nice, big beach umbrella.

Here’s a photo of my painting setup at the beach (You can click to enlarge this image):

Here’s what the scene looked like before I started, from the vantage point of my comfy beach chair. That dot up in the sky is actually somebody parasailing! If you click the image to enlarge it, you can just make out the parachute:

070830-lazy-morning-at-lake-george-scene-800.jpg

I did get some great photos to work from one night when we went on a sunset cruise. We also drove up Prospect Mountain, which has 100 mile views, and took some pictures up there. So, there should be more Lake George paintings coming along in the near future. Stay tuned!

I’m starting to work from the photos I took at Bannerman’s Island on Friday. This was the very beginning of the excursion, as the boat circled the island before approaching the north shore. It’s a beautiful morning view as the light strikes the structures, and the still water made for vivid reflections. Someday I’d like to do a large painting of this scene. The large structure is the Bannerman Armory. The small structure on the right is one of the towers in the water, which was to be part of a large entrance bay to the island.

This painting was done on location at Boscobel Restoration. It is the famous overview of Constitution Marsh and the Hudson River. I set up my easel in the cool shade under a big tree along the bluff. I think I’ve painted from this spot in nearly every season and every size. It occurred to me that I hadn’t done an 8×16″ summer view of the scene, so here it is for the very first time!

I went to the Brewster Farmer’s Market on Wednesday and bought a beautiful bouquet of wildflowers and some early Macintosh apples. I picked out a few flowers tonight to put in this tiny vase, which I’ve always wanted to paint, but somehow hasn’t yet made it into a painting. I set up the still life in my studio and painted it from life. Now I’ll get to eat the apple and enjoy the flowers for the next few days. My palette for this painting was Ultramarine blue, Hansa yellow, Alizarin Crimson hue, Yellow ochre, Titanium white.

I just got back from my trip to Golden Artist Colors headquarters earlier today. What a wonderful experience it was to go there! I picked the brains of some of the very knowledgeable staff members regarding sealing supports and isolation coats before varnishing. I always seal my boards with GAC100; they verified that they feel that is the best sealer for the job. They recommend Soft Gloss Gel mixed with water in about a 2:1 ratio for the isolation coat, so I’m going to get some of that asap. In the meantime, I am busy enjoying acrylics again!

It was way too hot to be standing out in the sun doing this painting on location! My EasyL painting umbrella saved the day, though I was still pretty cooked by the time I was done. The late afternoon light against the side of the red building at Tilly Foster Farm made it glow red-orange.

This building is the current home of the Putnam Arts Council. They are renting the space from Putnam County while their old headquarters is being rebuilt following the terrible fire this past winter. The rolling fields, barns and pastures of Tilly Foster Farm are a perfect setting for artists!

This is the painting I did this morning for the Artists on Location event in Garrison, New York. I painted down by an inlet of the Hudson River along Fair Street in Cold Spring. It was much chillier than I’d anticipated, hence the pun in the title of “Cold Spring Morning”. I framed the painting in my car and drove back to the gallery to deliver it. I’m not sure how accurate the color is on this image, since I don’t have the painting to compare with the digital image. The paintings were auctioned off starting at 5pm. I had to go to my opening at the Bannerman Island Gallery in Beacon, so had to miss the live auction.

Tilly Foster Farm is an old horse farm that was purchased a few years ago by Putnam County to retain as open space. It has beautiful rolling fields, old buildings and barns, and a fantastic overview of miles and miles from the top of the pastures. This painting was done from a photo I took there in the fall.

Making a Multi-Media Sketchbook
I’ve made a number of sketchbooks over the years and have recently been asked to share some of them. This is perhaps the easiest, most useful, and most versatile of them all. The biggest advantages to this design are that many different kinds of paper can be used for various media and effects, plus the paper can be removed easily for framing.

Use any kind of cardboard, foamcore, illustration board, or matboard for your covers. I used scrap pieces of matboard that I had around the house and cut two pieces to the same size. Purchase some ringbinder rings in an office supply store. I got mine at Staples (very inexpensive). Holes were punched in the matboard for the rings:

Next, cut various types of paper that you like to use for painting, drawing, and sketching. Be sure to cut the paper about 1/2 inch smaller than the matboard. When in use, you’ll be doubling over the matboard to serve as a firm drawing board. The matboard edges also serve to protect the edges and corners of the paper. Punch holes in the paper, making sure they line up with the holes you’ve punched in the covers. You can paint your cover to decorate your sketchbook, but I just left mine blank.

If you use a lot of wet media, consider a piece of foamcore for one or both covers, coated with a couple of coats of acrylic medium, to use as a painting board. You can even tape paper down to it that way after removing a sheet from the book, or use metal office clips to hold it. Oil pastel and soft pastel artists can include sheets of glassine with holes punched, to place between finished drawings.

Glue a pocket to the inside of the front cover. (See image below.) I used this to hold templates for standard sizes. If you have, for instance, a 5×7″ template in the pocket, you can pull it out to draw a quick 5×7 rectangle on a piece of the paper. Then you’ll have a drawing or painting that will fit perfectly into a ready-made mat and frame. The little pocket also comes in handy for photo references, drawings, a ruler, etc. I put a sticker on the inside of the cover saying “If found please return to” with my name, address and phone number.

You can click on the image below to enlarge it:

On the right side, the shiny plastic is a sheet of clear acetate. When working in colored pencil or graphite, I’d keep this under my hand to stop the pencil from smudging. I kept another sheet of it in the little pocket inside the cover. You can also keep glassine in the book, or whatever else you use to protect your finished work.

I hope this helps some of you who want a sketchbook that can do it all!

What an exquisite spring day we had. I met with a group of artist friends to paint at Teatown Lake Reservation in Ossining. The lake is best painted in spring before the foliage comes out. Once the trees and bushes leaf out, the lake views are obscured. Plus, the swans are there every spring and are good models! They have a nest near the bridge. I love this scene so much and have painted it many times. It presents lots of artistic challenges, so I go back every spring. Each year, I find I like my painting more than the year before. This one is my favorite from Teatown Lake so far.

I had high hopes that the sun was going to break through on my way over to Cold Spring to paint along the Hudson River at 7am this morning. I packed a bottle of iced tea and just wore a sweater. As I stood along the banks of the river, the clouds thickened and the cold wind picked up. I received a serious reality check, realizing that a warm spring day was merely wishful thinking.

This is a favorite spot of mine along the river. That rocky peak is Breakneck Ridge, and the finger of land jutting out is Little Stony Point.

Here’s another gorgeous micro reproduction painting. I was looking through a book of Impressionist painters and came across this painting by Alfred Sisley. I fell in love with the brushwork and colors in this gorgeous impressionist landscape painting. The image above shows the painting about actual size. Below is an enlargement of it. The quarter is for size reference purposes. (Click for further enlargement) They also look wonderful displayed as a group collection.

The painting will be sent with hanging hardware and gold thread as shown below, plus the gold tack to hang it from. It will arrive in a gold foil gift box with cotton batting and a gold ribbon, to complete the perfect gift for any art lover. If you prefer, a pin back can be affixed in place of the hanging hardware. Just email me if you want me to make that change.

Alfred Sisley (1839-1899) was the only English member of the original Impressionist group. He died without receiving the recognition he deserved, overcome by cancer and in poverty. He is best known for his landscapes of the countryside around Paris, and studied in the Gleyre studio beside Renoir and Monet.

This is an older piece of mine which I’ve never put up for sale before because I couldn’t bear to part with it. It still won’t be easy to let this one go. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t get the photo to fully capture the richness of the deep reds, or the saturation of the yellow sun. Suffice it to say that dramatic as it may look here in its digital representation, it is more beautiful in real life. This piece is ready to pop into any standard 8×10 frame.

Jamie’s Jewels—Starry Night After Van Gogh

starry-night-box-hanger-quarter-600.jpg

I was so excited by the way this looked once I attached the hanging hardware and gold thread. It will be the perfect gem to hang from a brass tack in a small nook on the wall, or above a mantle. They’d be fun to collect over time, and a grouping of them will make an elegant tiny gallery of “The Masters”! Plus, the little gold boxes I ordered for the minis have arrived! I just had to bump up this post and add the photo of the painting with all the fixings and fittings, the way it will be sent to you! (The quarter is there as a size reference only.)

Do you have a favorite painting by a “master” that you’d like to see as one of my Micro Master Series works? If so, please email me with the name of the artist and painting!

Here’s the painting below about actual size, depending on your monitor and resolution:

This “micro” is my rendition of Van Gogh’s famous painting, Starry Night. I love doing these little copies. It gives me an opportunity to really study a master painting, from the color to the brushstrokes.

This has been painted and framed with archival materials. It will be shipped in a beautiful gold box with cotton batting. It will be sent as shown above, with hanging rings affixed and a gold string to hang it “salon style”. If you would prefer it with a pin back, I can remove the little eye rings for the thread, and attach a pin back instead.

This charming miniature, based on Matisse’ famous 1944 painting “Annelies”, is in a gold wood frame. It can be sent either with a pin back, or with a gold string to hang ‘salon style’. (Specify which you’d like.) Tiny minis like this can also be beautifully displayed on small tabletop easels. It will be sent in a little gold box, just like a tiny treasure.

I chose a challenging subject for such a tiny copy and it took me ages to get all the details in place. The painting itself measures 1×1.25″. With the frame, it is 2×2.25″. The quarter is in the photo for size reference. It’s hard to appreciate the intricate detailing of this piece when seeing it online at larger than actual size!

The image below is approximately actual size, depending on your monitor resolution:

The painting I posted yesterday made me remember this plein air painting I did at the same park. Although it was pretty much finished on location, when I got it home and looked at it with interior lighting, I decided I wanted to change a few things. I set it aside, and there it sat for a long time. I finally pulled it out today to adjust some color and make a couple of changes. I’m much happier with it now. It’s ready for a frame!

This darling 4×4″ painting is the Chinese Friendship Pavillion at Lasdon Arboretum, in Somers NY. The strong reds of the structure stand out against the greens, with the deep blue sky reflecting in the water. This is painted in casein, which is an archival milk-based, artist quality medium, wonderful for its durability, strong color, quick drying, and mat finish. The painting was then varnished to give it a bit of sheen. I am including the little jeweled frame (shown below with the painting) at no extra charge, so that you can display it right away.

Many thanks to Rodney and Tamara Money for the photo reference of their adorable bird. BeBe won top bench placement in the African Lovebird Society Pet Writing Contest just a few weeks ago. He is a Dutch Blue Pied Peach-faced Lovebird. Rodney and Tamara are lovebird breeders in North Carolina. You can check out the cute arrivals at their website. Rodney is also a composer, so it’s not surprising that BeBe is playing a piano concerto.

I probably don’t need to tell you how much fun it was to work on this painting, but I do think my lovebird, Mango, got a little jealous.

Today I had a great time painting with palette knives for the first time in a long time. I must have been color starved after being away from painting much of this week! This was so much fun that I think I’d like to get back to doing some more knife paintings—-perhaps one a week as a change of pace. This is larger than many of my “daily paintings” at 12×12″. The paint is extremely thick and the work is very textural, which is hard to see in a digital rendition. I used a fairly large palette of colors, compared to my usual limited palette choice:
Cadmium yellow lemon
Cadmium yellow pale
Napthol Red
Burnt Sienna
Ultramarine Blue
Cobalt Blue
Cerulean Blue
Titanium White

Tomorrow I’ll finish up a painting I started while my neice was here. I’m looking forward to getting back into the daily painting swing of things again.

I looked out the window this morning and there was a beautiful sunrise of subdued violets and yellows over the lake. I wasn’t yet set up to paint, and knew that what I was seeing would vanish long before I had a chance to lay out palette and get my brushes. Rather than skip painting a sunrise, I went through photos I’d taken of the view in previous winters. I came across one I’d been meaning to paint for a long time, and spent the morning having a wonderful time doing this painting.

Tomorrow morning, I’ll have to make sure I’m set up earlier to catch it in the moment!

Here’s an update of my show calendar so far for 2007:
March 10-about April 8—Hudson River Show at Freshman Fine Arts, 4 South Chestnut St, Beacon
May 12-June 4—Lower Hudson Valley Plein Air Painters show at Bannerman Island Gallery, Main St, Beacon
June 15-July 1—White Silo Winery (four-artist show)
September—Two-person show with Suhua Wood at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation
October—Artists on Location, Garrison
October—Two-person show with Walter Mosley at Bannerman Island Gallery
December—Solo show at North Salem Library
Of course you can always see a rotating selection of my work in all styles and subjects at The Paint Box in Bedford Hills.

There’s a link on the right to my blog for my shows, openings and other events. Stay tuned there for more news. I’ll add specifics as the dates get closer.

When we were in Maine last summer, we went for a sunset sail on the four-masted schooner Margaret Todd. We lucked out with a spectacular sunset. I took oodles of photos, including the one of this boat sailing nearby. Every time he tacked, the light would catch the sails from a different direction. I was so glad to have my camera along!

I got up extra early to finish the painting this morning. I’m going to be offline for a few days after this post, but I’ll see y’all back here on Tuesday.

This 3×5″ plein air casein painting is beautifully framed and ready to hang on your wall. Casein is an archival, non-soluble (when dry) milk-based medium with brilliant color and a matt finish. It looks similar to oils but without the slight gloss, and like oils, the paint does not lift. It is a wonderful and underused medium that is experiencing a resurgence in popularity, and with good reason!

One evening when the sunset was spectacular, my husband and I drove to the other side of the lake to take pictures. This group of people was just setting out in their boat to enjoy the last of a quiet summer evening.Below is the pochade box that I often use for these small paintings, with just the first layer of paint on the panel. The glass palette slides to the side to access the paints and supplies below. I secure the painting panel to a slightly larger board because with a painting this small, once I get to this stage, I hold it in my hand while painting. Taping it to the larger panel enables me to hold it without getting paint all over my hands.

Fall Reflections and demo

5 x 7″, Oils on canvas covered hardboard
SOLD! Please email me at JamieWG@aol.com to inquire about a similar painting.
Fall Reflections was painted from a photo I took at Muscoot Farm in Somers, NY. I’m mainly a plein air painter and haven’t worked much from pictures, but I take photos wherever I go to paint. Over the years, I’ve accumulated thousands of photos that I have yet to paint from! It’s been fun to dig some of them out at last, and paint the scenes I envisioned on canvas years ago, but never got around to painting. I’ve always wanted to do a painting that featured reflections like this, with fall leaves floating on the top of the water. This was a lot of fun to paint, and I’m eager to have a go at a similar subject en plein air soon, perhaps at the brook behind my house.

When I work from photos, I prefer to paint directly off the computer screen, rather than printing them out. The color is much better, and I can crop the image, move it around, enlarge and reduce at will. I can even rotate both the image on the screen and the painting, and work on them both upside down! Here is my initial setup. You can see that I secured the small canvas board to a larger board to make it easier to work with. That way, I can hold the board in my hand, paint right to the edges, and rotate it easily. The canvas is toned a greyed violet, since I saw that as the optimum background for this particular painting. I added a touch of liquin and used an alkyd white to get it to tack up a little faster, knowing I’d want to do a lot of layering alla prima for this painting.

I selected just four colors for this piece (though additional colors are on the palette). I used cadmium yellow lemon, cadmium red medium, ultramarine blue deep, and transparent red oxide, plus of course titanium white. I blocked in the reflections and placement of the grasses, and worked that stage until it was completely finished.

Here’s another image of the still-incomplete painting. After the colors were down, I swept a brush side to side to show movement in the water. Most of the work with the reflections and color was then complete:

Once the painting was at the stage above, I let it set up for a half hour so the paint wouldn’t be so slippery, then went back and added in the leaves floating in the water, and the definition of the grasses at the top, tweaked it here and there, and signed it. Done!

Late Day Dog Walk Along the Hudson

7 x 5″, Oils on canvas covered hardboard

This painting was done from a photograph taken the same evening as the miniature painting I did yesterday. This woman was walking her dog, and came around the bend just as I was snapping the shutter. I told her it was perfect timing. She thought I meant that she’d ruined my photo, but I assured her that the backlit figures of her and her dog would make an ideal focal point! It was a warm fall evening, and she remarked how after 30 years of living in this area, she realizes how fortunate we are to have walks along the Hudson in that amazing light and tranquility.

I wish I could get far enough ahead on the daily paintings to be able to photograph my work when it’s dry, instead of when it’s wet and shiny, throwing glare all over the painting as well as altering colors and contrasts. This painting looks so much better in person, and I know I’ll be able to get a better image of it once it’s dry!

It’s another wee painting off my brushes! This one is ACEO trading card size, 2.5×3.5″. It was painted from a photo taken by Deb Leger. (Thank you, Deb!)

In the art world, ACEO stands for Artist Cards Editions and Originals. They are collectible paintings in a standard, miniature format. The size is 2.5×3.5″, like baseball cards and playing cards. They are so much fun to paint and collect that every so often I do a few of them. Some artists sell prints of paintings in that size as ACEOs, but mine are always one-of-a-kind originals. ACEOs are truly fun to collect for those who love art. Everybody can find a place for these little gems, and they are reasonably priced. It’s an easy and relatively inexpensive way to acquire work from some favorite artists.

Artists On Location, Fall in Garrison plein air

5×7″, Gouache on Fabriano Artistico HP

Today was the bi-annual Artists on Location day in Garrison, NY. 85 artists contribute paintings to be auctioned at the Garrison Art Center. Most submit paintings for the silent auction only, but plein air painters can also go out today and paint on location, return by 3pm with their framed plein air paintings, and have those in a live auction in the evening.

I arrived at 8:30 am and submitted a painting for the silent auction, then drove to a nearby location to paint along the Hudson River. It was freezing cold out! Wimp that I am, I painted this 5×7 from inside my car parked at the scene, took some photos of it, put it into a frame, took another pic of it framed, and delivered it back to the gallery at the art center.

Unfortunately, my camera jammed. The only photo that downloaded was this one of the painting framed behind glass, with all the glare and reflections that entails. You can even see the image of the camera reflecting in the painting. Grrrr! I hate it when that happens!

The Towers at Bannerman’s Island

SOLD! Please email me at JamieWG@aol.com to inquire about a similar painting.
5×7″, Gouache on hot press watercolor paper

Bannerman’s Island is supposedly haunted, treacherous to reach by boat due to strong currents, and covered with poison ivy. Although it is off limits to the general public, that description makes you wonder why anybody would want to go there anyway! The island has a fascinating history, and the last owner built a huge armory castle along the shoreline, with a residence castle at the peak of the island. He began constructing towers in the water to form a grand entrace, and sunk all kinds of debris around the perimeter to deter trespassers. A huge fire gutted the structures. Some of them are held up only by the poison ivy vines growing up the sides.

You can imagine the thrill I got when I was asked to go by boat out to the island to do a painting for an auction to benefit Bannerman Castle Trust, the organization charged with renovating the exquisite structures. I jumped at the chance. I took some pictures along the way, knowing that painting there on location was not something I’d be able to do again very soon!

I had hoped to return to paint there again this year, but wasn’t able to arrange the date. This is a small gouache painting on Arches hot press watercolor paper, done from one of those photos I took on my expedition.
