I rented it from Netflix and absolutely loved it. It is an enactment of the lives of Monet, Renoir, Manet, Cezanne, Degas, and other Impressionist painters living at that time around Paris. Fascinating and eye-opening!

I must be feeling a little better today, because I was somehow able to summon the energy to trudge down to the studio and do this portrait of Lulu, one of my Jenday Conures. We have five parrots here, but Lulu prides herself on being the biggest troublemaker of them all. She loves to sit on my shoulder, where she constantly picks at my shirt collar or hair, and I have to wrestle my eyeglasses away from her! It’s hard to get angry with her when she turns around and says, “Kiss?”

I had picked up a few long/tall format frames, and they turned out to be perfect for this painting of Lulu, so this painting is available framed!

I couldn’t resist showing Lulu her portrait. She thinks it makes her appear too sophisticated. I think I’ll have to do another with her doing some of her usual bratty antics!

7 x 5″, Oils on canvas covered hardboard, unframed

Since I’m still sick, I am bumping up a painting of one of my favorite trees along the Hudson River to share with my viewers. It’s become hidden in the depths of my blog, so I’m happy to pull it up to the top again where it can be seen. I did some sketches today, but don’t have the energy to get into the workshop to take pictures of them and do the uploading.

This was painted on a warm, sunny fall day. I took advantage of it by driving over to Garrison and painting my favorite tree along the Hudson River. It is just opposite West Point Military Academy. Fortunately for me, the tree still had leaves, though it was already November!

This painting is already dry and varnished, so it’s ready to send and would make a great gift!

Today I pulled out my acrylics to finish up this still life that I started last week. When I left for Florida, I put the bowl of fruit into the refrigerator with a sign on it saying, “Jamie’s Still Life—DO NOT EAT!” I suppose they got the message, because it was still there today. I think I’ll have a clementine now!

Here are some of the previous stages of the painting:

First I drew in my composition with acrylic burnt sienna paint, and blocked in some values. I don’t spend too much time on this stage—just enough to kill some of the white support, add a little complexity to the color, and give myself a road map for local color and values.

071206-apples-n-clementines-wip1-400.jpg

Next, I set out a pretty large selection of colors for this painting because I really wanted to capture the vibrancy of the fruit and bright bowl:

071206-apples-n-clementines-wip2-400.jpg

I started with the shadow areas, and worked until the support was covered with the local colors.

071206-apples-n-clementines-wip3-400.jpg

To finish, I pushed lights and darks, and added in some details, highlights, and reflected color.

My parents have this beautiful bronze statue of a dancer in their home. I’ve always wanted to paint it, and enjoyed sketching her from many different angles in ink and watercolor. The flowers below were sketched out on the lanai, and the chinese figure is from a set of three, but I only had time to start one, and didn’t get to finish it. These are all on two-page spreads in my sketchbook.

I just returned from a couple of days of visiting my parents in Naples, Florida. They’ve got a wonderful lanai overlooking the Gulf of Mexico, so I did a couple of watercolor sketches out there. Above is a section of their seating area, and below is a quick sketch of the view of the Gulf from the lanai. Both are watercolor, 8×10″ across a two page spread in my sketchbook.

If you like my website design…..

Posted by Jamie on December 5th, 2007

The designer of my website/blog is now offering this software via his company, Digital Sublimity! I’ve been so happy with the way it works, so I hope some of you who appreciate the functions that I have here will go check it out.

One of the pitfalls to a blog is that it doesn’t allow for static pages to view large groups of work as thumbnail images, like a webpage does. However, this site was designed to give me that capability of a website, while maintaining the easy functionality and updating potential of a blog. Paintings come and go automatically on the “Available” page as I paint, post and sell works.

In addition, the “ArtPal” feature of the blog enables artists to easily put Paypal buttons into their posts wherever they wish. On those posts, the button is automatically converted to “Sold!” when somebody pays for a painting, so you never have to worry about double-selling a piece. It then removes the painting from the list of Available works, and places it in the “Sold” category.

I’d encourage those who have been considering a blog/website, or who have been unhappy with the features they currently have available, to get in touch with Digital Sublimity, and see what they can work out for you. As they say there, they do “more than you think for less than you think”!

Fall Morning in Cold Spring on the Hudson River and demo

My painting buddy, Suhua Wood, found this amazing spot along the Hudson River in Cold Spring for us to paint! I started this painting on location a few weeks ago, but didn’t have enough time to finish it there. I finally finished it up from a photo.

I took pictures of the various stages as I painted. First I underpainted with Golden Fluid Acrylics, using Transparent Red Oxide for all but the lightest areas. Some light areas then got a wash of Transparent Yellow Oxide, and cool darks got some Ultramarine Blue.

071203-fall-morning-in-cold-spring-12×12-wip1-500.jpg

I pulled out some heavier bodied acrylics, and laid in the sky and water. You can see an image of my scene and setup here as I was working.

071203-fall-morning-in-cold-spring-12×12-wip2-400.jpg

Then I started working with the local colors I saw. The image below shows how much I completed on location, and how far I still had to go.

071203-fall-morning-in-cold-spring-12×12-wip3-400.jpg

I used a photo of the scene to finish up the painting, in combination with the information already there from having worked on location. Being able to do even a portion of the piece en plein air always makes a difference in the outcome.

North Salem show

Posted by Jamie on December 1st, 2007

Many thanks to everybody who came to the opening reception of my solo show at the North Salem Library!

I tried to snap a few pictures of some of the paintings before things got busy. As you can see, it’s a good thing I’m a painter and not a photographer!

north-salem-show-2-800.jpg

My daughter Sarah had the job of arranging the little shelf of small works. She has such a good eye.

I challenged visitors to pick out which ones were oils and which were acrylics, but the painting above on the right, in the middle row, with the dark hillside, pink grasses with goldenrod and backlit tree fooled nearly everybody.

north-salem-show-3-800.jpg

The light streaming in from the window caused a lot of glare to the paintings framed under glass, but you can get an idea…..They’re all on the site here in their own individual posts, unframed, if you want to see better images of specific works. Clearly there are advantages and disadvantages to framing under glass! They didn’t show as much glare in real life as they’re showing in the photos.

north-salem-show-4-800.jpg

The Farthest to Travel Award goes to Seth Golden of Golden Acrylics, and his mom, who drove all the way down from Oneonta, New York for the opening. That was a huge and wonderful surprise to me!

I really appreciate all my friends and neighbors who came from near and far, enjoyed the show, and provided great laughs, support, and companionship. Thank you also to the staff of the North Salem Library who made the show possible, and the library board members who visited.

For those who couldn’t come to the opening reception, the show will run through the end of December during regular library hours.

A Surprise Gift

Several weeks ago, I got a surprise package in the mail from my mom. I opened the brown, cardboard box, and inside was a beautiful red and gold silk box!

sumi-brush-box-closed-400.jpg

Imagine my surprise when I opened the box and found this exquisite set of Sumi brushes:

sumi-brush-box-open-400v.jpg

I think I must be the biggest art materials junkie of all time, so of course I was more than thrilled with this new acquisition. I went to the internet and read up on Sumi brushes and how to care for them. I washed the starch out of them, and made a hanger for them to dry out of a clothes hanger and paper clips:

I’ve been so busy getting ready for my solo show that I didn’t have much time to play with them yet, but I wanted to at least doodle a bit and say, “Thank you, Mom!”

What a miserable, rainy day outside! I decided over the weekend that I’d like to start a series painted from windows, and what do you know—the very first day I go at it, it’s grey and raining. I really enjoyed capturing the remains of the fall colors from inside the warm, cozy space here. I’m amazed by how long the oak trees are hanging onto their leaves this year.

New floor today!

Posted by Jamie on November 19th, 2007

Today was the big day when they finally came to install the new wood laminate floor in my studio! I spent yesterday moving out all my art supplies and furniture. This morning, my parrots Lulu, Lucy, and Cookie were brought upstairs. They were not happy about the move! Fortunately, nearly everything in there is on wheels. There’s one huge cabinet that is not on wheels, but my dear husband is going to put them on tonight, so it’ll be easy to move it back in.

I love having everything in the studio so mobile. If I’m working on a larger painting, or have a model in, or just want a change of scene, I can have a new studio setup in minutes. Now that I’ll have the wood floor instead of carpeting, it will be even easier to rearrange at the slightest whim.

Needless to say, my computer in there is disconnected (I’m on hubby’s now), my camera software is inaccessible, and most of my art supplies are packed away in cabinets and drawers up against one another…. But the floor is done, and it looks fabulous!

I guess I’ll be moving furniture most of tomorrow and reorganizing.

This little painting was done from a photo that I took at the Marshlands Conservancy in Rye. Sometimes there just isn’t time on location to paint all the beautiful scenes I see! Thank goodness for cameras at those times, so that I can paint them later. Photos never capture the brilliance of being on location, but I rely on my plein air paintings and my memories of the light and color to try and complete what the photos leave out.

The vase and carnations on the left is gouache, and the other sketches are watercolor. These sketches from the past few days have been done in a Hand Book Journal, sold by Dick Blick and other art stores. The paper is very thick and holds up to water media quite well.

071112-martini-and-flowerpot-600.jpg

From time to time, I really enjoy doing more sketchbook work while I shift gears. These are both watercolor sketches.

Now that plein air season is coming to a close, I’m exploring other possibilities for winter subject matter. I’m excited about diving back into portraiture and figure drawing. I’m also getting ready for my North Salem show. Today I pulled out a lot of my paintings from the area and started sifting through to decide what will go into the show and what I won’t have room for. I’ve got to start varnishing soon and selecting frames…like tomorrow!

Mannikin Fun

Posted by Jamie on November 13th, 2007

071111-mannekin-fun-600.jpg

One thing I learned as a result of doing these sketches is that if you’re going to paint mannikins, you should at least learn how to spell it. Now I know that it can be spelled mannikin, manikin, or mannequin. Leave it to me, with so many right ways of doing it, to get it wrong on my sketchbook page.

Anyway, moving on to the sketch itself, I’ve had this little mannikin for quite some time. She finally emerged from her box to pose for me. The two left ones are in gouache. The two on the right are done in Prismacolor pencil, then blended with turpenoid and a Q tip.

I can see lots of potential for her to make an appearance in still life paintings, posing with all sorts of props. Unfortunately, this one does not come off the stand. I’ll have to find one that can be positioned in sitting poses, and which has more versatility.

I only have 66 pages left in my sketchbook now! I’m aiming to finish it by the end of 2007. That means a little more than a two page spread every day in addition to whatever paintings I do. I am determined to dig into a new sketchbook at the start of the new year.

Spring Sunset

This was painted from a photo taken during the “Night of the Amazing Sunset”, which I will always remember. A huge double rainbow over the lake followed a late summer shower a couple of months ago. The sky glowed everywhere. The rainbow was to the east, and this amazing sunset was the south view that evening. It’s times like this when I consider myself so fortunate to live by the lake. I can run out at a moment’s notice to capture spectacular conditions when they appear!

I couldn’t resist “pushing” the color in this painting. It was so vividly colorful in my memory. Sometimes I just need to let loose and allow the color junkie in me to emerge. Sunsets present the perfect opportunity for that! I’d like to paint this scene again soon with a little more restraint too. 🙂

My palette for this painting was:
Hansa Yellow Opaque
Napthol Red Light
Ultramarine Blue
Phthalo Blue
Titanium White

Old Yellow Jug and Hickory Nuts

Every fall, I start putting together ideas for what I’d like to paint in the winter. That way, when fall draws to an end, I’m enthusiastic about starting my new winter life in the studio. This little, old yellow jug was purchased at a flea market recently. It’s worn, warm, ochre finish and subtle variations in color led me to pair it with these hickory nuts that I collected on one of my plein air outings. Rather than putting them against a cool-colored background for contrast, I decided to go with a warm background and play with the subtle color shifts for a highly unified color scheme in the painting. The whole thing feels like fall to me. This is the little jug’s painting debut, though the hickory nuts did make it into a recent watercolor in my sketchbook!

My palette for this painting was:
Raw Umber
Yellow Ochre
Hansa Yellow Opaque
Napthol Red Light
Ultramarine Blue
Titanium White

Looking on as I painted were two of my studio mascots, basking in the warm sunlight streaming in through the window. Their names are Lulu and Lucy, though I affectionately refer to them collectively as “Double Trouble”. They are Jenday Conures. I leave their cage door open when I’m in the studio, and they go in and out as they please. Lulu (the closer of the two in the photo) likes to say “kiss” and “up”. She expects any visitors to pick her up and tell her what a good bird she is (even when she’s not!)

To receive my painting post cards via surface mail….

Posted by Jamie on November 10th, 2007

Whenever I have a big show, I send out a post card with an image of one of the paintings for the show on the front, and information on the location of the show on the back. Some of my customers and blog-watchers enjoy collecting the painting images this way and attending my opening receptions. I am in the process of mailing out the cards for my next show, which is a solo show at North Salem Library. If you’d like to receive it, please email me with your full name and surface mail address, and I’ll send you one. It’s a beautiful winter snow scene overlooking Peach Lake.

I do not share these addresses with anybody; they are for my own mailing list only. If you’re on my mailing list, you’ll have received a couple of these within the past couple of months. If you didn’t get them, then you’re not on the list!

Second Saturday…..That’s Tonight!

You can see six of my paintings at the wonderful Riverwinds Gallery, and then walk a block west to 150 Main Street, to see 19 more of them at the Bannerman Gallery! I’ll be around to say hi between 4 and 7pm.

Finally this painting is done. Here is the painting demo, as promised. My palette consisted of:
Hansa Yellow Opaque
Hansa Yellow Light (fluid acrylics)
Napthol Red Light
Transparent Red Oxide (fluid acrylics)
Ultramarine Blue
Phthalo Blue
Titanium White

I started with the Transparent Red Oxide, using Golden Fluid Acrylics. After a few placement lines, I blocked in my midtones and darks:

Next, I added Ultramarine Blue for the coolest darks, and Hansa Yellow Light for the lightest areas.

Then I laid in my sky, using Ultramarine Blue, Titanium White, and a touch of Phthalo Blue to bring the sky back to a mid-blue and give it a little chroma boost. (I apologize for the glare in this image.)

Once the sky is in, I start working local color, allowing my underpainting to show through in places. This is where I left off the other day, when I posted the image:

From there, I added more variations to my colors, filled out the textures of the trees, and pushed the lights and darks to create more contrast. Then the finishing touches went in, like the tree trunks and the stone wall in the background. Voila…done!

I hope you enjoyed following along with me in the painting process!

Moon Setting Over Crow’s Nest Mountain, painting and demo

This was painted on location from Cold Spring, New York, along the shore of the Hudson River. Crow’s Nest Mountain is actually 42 feet higher than neighboring Storm King, but doesn’t get as much of the publicity. The moon was setting over the cliffs, presenting an irresistible scene. I thought I’d show a demo of my process, so I took some photos along the way.

I started by mixed up a painting “medium” of Golden Acrylic Flow Release in a ratio of 1:10 with water, poured some of that into a little palette cup, and added about 25% Golden Acrylic Glazing Liquid (Gloss). I used that to dilute paint for my underpainting, so as not to underbind the paint, and to help the flow of the color.

I began drawing in a couple of lines with heavily diluted Transparent Red Oxide. Once the placement lines were in, I started blocking in darks with thicker paint, and used thinner washes on the midtones. Then I used Transparent Yellow Oxide over the light areas (except for the sky). Areas of this photo appear blue due to sky reflection; those areas are actually white.

Next, I pulled out some Ultramarine blue, and used that combined with the transparent yellow and red oxides to block in cool darks and start a green wash on the foreground. Adding Titanium white and just a dash of phthalo blue to the ultramarine, I blocked in the sky and some sky holes in the tree.

Below is a photo of the painting on my easel, with the scene in the background, so you can see what I was working on. Compositionally, I’d have needed a wider canvas to fit in these elements if I wanted to keep everything to scale. Instead, I compressed the scene, shortening the width of the mountain, and bringing the moon over and down toward the peak. (You can just barely see the moon in the photo of the scene, in the upper right corner.)

I added Hansa Yellow Opaque and Napthol Red to my palette, and started working on the local color. I wanted to bring out the warm tones in the cliffs, so started putting in the pinks and violets early on. The red underpainting helped with that, as well as giving that orangy fall atmosphere. Here it is at the “almost done” point:

Lastly, I added cooler colors to the cliff face and did a once-over throughout the painting, adding finishing touches and making adjustments.

I hope you enjoyed the demo and plein air painting with me!

Gourds have so much personality, don’t you agree? I have a great time personifying them in paintings. These two snugglers are the result of a trip to the local farmer’s market.

I was supposed to hike into Constitution Marsh with a friend to paint yesterday, but it was raining. Fortunately, I had photos from a previous fall visit there, so I pulled this one up on the screen and painted from the image on my monitor. It’s not the same, but it was the closest I could get to being there!

Sketches with pen and ink

Posted by Jamie on October 25th, 2007

I try to make the most of the time I have to spend waiting for my daughter here and there. One of my favorite ways to utilize that time is to sketch. This is 8×10, done across a two-page spread in my sketchbook with Pitt pens. Trying to capture the different foliage textures and the distances (not to mention the architecture!) is great practice.

I rarely let myself sketch in pencil, even with complex subjects. There’s something about the unforgiving quality of ink that is very appealing to me. You need to really think your important lines through in advance, and make a commitment before setting pen to paper. I find I make much more of an effort to get it right on the first try when I know there’s no going back!

This one is 8×5″, on a single page in the book. It is the side of the Howland Center in Beacon, NY. It seems nothing opens in Beacon until noon, so whenever I get there early, I have some time to sketch or paint.

Pitt Pens, 8×10″ in my sketchbook

I bought a set of warm and cool grey Pitt pens a couple of weeks ago and finally had a chance to test drive them in my sketchbook. They were lots of fun to draw with, but the barrel values really don’t match the ink, which makes it a challenge to select the right pen! This is in my bound sketchbook, so is not for sale.

This was painted high on a hilltop above the Hudson River, behind the Vanderbilt Mansion in Hyde Park. I was really hoping to paint down by the river, but when I arrived at the location, I learned that the road has been closed all season for repairs. Although that was a huge disappoinment, I found this beautiful spot behind the mansion from which to paint the little red boathouse that I love to put into my paintings from Hyde Park. Pretty soon, all that beautiful fall foliage will be gone!

This was painted on location at Bannerman’s Island along the shorline by the Wee Bay. Zack, who works on maintaining the grounds there, told me he’d just cut down brush in this area, and it might make for a great painting location. He was right! The skies had cleared a bit by then, so I even had some sunshine at last.

Red Gerbera Daisy in a Glass Vase

5.5×8.5″, acrylic on sketchbook paper

After a full day of plein air painting yesterday, I came home and just couldn’t resist this red daisy. It was in a bouquet on my kitchen counter, and I’ve been dying to paint it all week. I snipped the stem, put it in this round vase, and pulled out my Golden Fluid Acrylics. I didn’t do any drawing—just went right in with paint. It was so much fun to explore that rich red color and the glass. I’m glad that tired as I was, I didn’t miss the opportunity for this painting.

Since this one is in my sketchbook, I can’t remove it to sell. However, I’d love to do another, so if you’d like to purchase one, just let me know!

Here is another plein air painting from the wonderful Bannerman Island. This is the view downriver from the castle residence ruins at the peak of the island. It is quite a striking Hudson River view from up there! The skies were threatening and overcast, but it didn’t rain. When the little tug boat and huge barge went by, I snatched the opportunity and painted them in. They are so tiny next to the enormous mountains!

Here’s a photo of my setup on top of the castle ruins, before I started painting. I love using my little, featherweight pochade box for these small works. It’s about the only way to get around the island and paint.

A portion of the sale of this painting goes to Bannerman Castle Trust, which maintains the island and its structures, and undertakes renovation projects there. They also conduct guided tours to the island by boat, which can be booked through the gallery. Public access is not otherwise permitted because the structures are too dangerous.

There has been a lot of interest in my acrylics on watercolor paper, so Bannerman Castle Trust took me out to Bannerman’s Island by boat to paint more for the gallery! It’s a tough job, but somebody’s got to do it. *big grin* I always have the time of my life when I go out there to paint, and this time was no exception!

To give you an idea of how tough it can be to get around parts of the island, here’s a picture of where I was when I painted this painting. I had to lug my equipment up the slope, and then down this side, then back up again. I initially set my chair where you see it here, but then moved it down to where I took this picture from, for the better vantage point closer to the water.

This is my painting from yesterday’s Artists on Location event in Garrison, New York. It’s a terrible photo; the sky is really not cyan, and the water is more muted in the actual painting. I had to take the photo in my car before I delivered the painting. That threw the colors all out of whack. The painting sold at the auction, so I won’t have a chance to get a better photo.

It was freezing cold yesterday morning, so I parked my car at the Riverview Restaurant’s lot in Cold Spring and painted from the passenger seat, using my little pochade painting box! They have a fabulous view of the Hudson River and Storm King Mountain. Unfortunately, there is a sewage treatment plant next door, but whipping out my Creative License, I turned that back into the nice grassy field that it used to be. I left in the train tracks, which run up along the Hudson to Poughkeepsie.

Here’s a pic of the framed painting, as it was delivered to the gallery (photo color still off). You can click on this one to see a larger image. Can you find the sailboat in the painting?

This was painted from a photo I took at the Open Land Foundation in North Salem a week or so ago. It’s been rainy all week, so I had to resort to a photo to paint this landscape. I was drawn to the bright green field through the shadowed trees, with light falling on the path in the early morning.

071010-in-the-kitchen-gfa-800.jpg

I love to play in my sketchbook. I’ve had so many shows lately that the pressure has been on to turn out finished pieces, but sometimes I think this is how I like to spend my time the most. It enables me to test drive ideas, relax, and enjoy the “doing” of art.

The pears in the shallow bowl are ink sketches, with acrylic washes laid over while the ink was too wet. I get impatient. Below the pears are my new bottle of Sennelier Walnut Ink, and a little inkwell I got in the gift shop at Sturbridge Village. It’s made there in the pottery shop, and it works really well!

The apple and pear on the facing page are from the Brewster Farmer’s Market. They are painted in Golden Fluid Acrylics, with no preliminary drawing; I just went in straight with paint—always my favorite painting method! For the pear, I experimented with the Irridescent Gold Deep, using it to mix my greens, and with ochre. The shimmer is quite subtle when combined with the other colors. When the light hits it just so, you see the sparkling irridescence. I think I like it!

I’m looking forward to the transition to studio painting for the winter. I’ve been rounding up ideas for still life paintings, some larger landscapes from photos, and doing more in my sketchbook on a regular basis. I’ve got a new sketchbook waiting for me. I’d like to start it in January with the new year, so that should give me some incentive to get through the rest of my current sketchbook before 2007 draws to a close!

This was painted en plein air overlooking the Hudson River from the Benmarl Vinyard in Marlboro, New York. I was there with several other painters. Everybody was painting the river or the orchard, but I was drawn to these two chairs facing the river. They looked like they were enjoying the view, in the shady spot under the ornamental tree with the cascading branches.

I had such a wonderful time when I was down at the Marshlands Conservancy in Rye a couple of weeks ago. The weather was perfect, and there were gorgeous views and scenes to paint everywhere I looked. Fortunately, I took a lot of photos while I was there, because I couldn’t possibly paint every view I saw that day on location. I put one up on my computer monitor to paint this scene.

Many thanks to everybody who came out to Ward Pound Ridge Reservation today for our second show reception and to see us paint! The building with the gallery where our show is has a nice view of the little “toll booth” on the preserve where the parking fees are collected. The trees beyond were at peak fall performance, and the fields were ablaze with pink grasses. It provided the perfect fall subject to paint while chatting with visitors to the show.

I am finally getting a little tired of overcast mornings. I decided to do this one very small, and sat in front of one of my favorite fall trees to paint. The quarter is there for size reference; the painting is just 2″ square! I love the way the tree twists and bends. These tiny stretched canvases are just too cute.

The edges of the canvas are painted gold. The painting comes in a gold gift box with a gold bow, and the easel is included. Do your holiday shopping early.

Two receptions tomorrow! Come join us….

From 4:30-6pm tomorrow (10/6), I’ll be at the Opening Reception of the Fine Arts Show, held at Tilly Foster Farm. The show is in the Putnam Arts Council Building #8. My large painting, The Wall Shelf, was accepted into the show. It’s one of my personal favorites, and I hope some of you can come see it in person. The show runs for a month. Once the clouds broke this morning, the light and colors by the lake were gorgeous. I’m glad I decided to stay home and paint here!

Where are the grape vines, you’re wondering? That little green tree is totally engulfed in the vines! Although I know it’s bad for the tree, I love the way they droop over the branches so gracefully.

The dramatic skies over the lake here led me to stay home to paint this. I was thinking about how John Constable did hundreds of sky studies. It’s not often that we get these gorgeous cloud formations, so I wanted to take full advantage of the opportunity to try and capture them in paint.

This morning I painted at the Open Land Foundation on Baxter Road in North Salem, New York. I met lots of friendly folks with their dogs, and thoroughly enjoyed the gorgeous fall weather and serene location. I walked all over trying to select a scene; it seemed like there was a paintable vista everywhere I looked. I finally chose this location near the road, drawn by the overlook to the pond and the strong color of the goldenrod.

This is a terrible photo of my second painting that sold last night following the Rhinebeck Paintout. I had to take the photo with a flash and dismal lighting. The color of the sky and background hills is waaaaay off! In spite of the bad photo, I did want to be able to at least show an idea of what my other painting looked like.

I love this view from Olana looking toward the Catskills. If there’d been a more dramatic sky yesterday, I’d have done a vertical format instead, or a lower horizon that featured more sky. The tall, relatively narrow tree has a wonderful shape, but showcasing the top of the tree would have left nothing happening on the other side of the painting on this clear, nearly-cloudless day. Cutting out much of the sky showcases the background mountains to draw us into the painting. Many thanks to my buyers from last night for sharing my love of the Hudson Valley in art.

Today I participated in Barrett Art Center’s Rhinebeck paintout. I went up to Frederic Church’s estate, Olana, to enjoy the beautiful weather and soak up some of his inspiration. I loved the way the tree framed the building, and the way the shadows cast on the side of the mansion and foreground made the light yellow glow.

I finished two paintings at Olana today. I’ll post the other one tomorrow. Both sold this evening.

Plein air painting is always so full of suspense. Not only don’t you know how the painting will turn out, but you never know what may happen on the journey and during the process. It’s always an adventure; I think that’s why I’m so hooked!

A few days ago when I went to Long Island Sound to paint at Marshlands Conservancy, it was an easy ride, and even the painting process seemed effortless. By contrast, today was a true traffic nightmare, and I felt like I fought for this painting every step of the way! That really took me by surprise. I’ve painted the Constitution Marsh overview from Boscobel so many times that I never thought this marsh view in Rye would give me such a battle. I came home so tired that I had to take a nap!

The castle remains on Bannerman’s Island tower above the Hudson River like something out of a movie. While plein air painting on Bannerman’s Island, I took lots of photos of the views and castle ruins to work from in the studio. This is a view of the Armory side entrance from the path above. The painting is a diminutive 2.75″ square, and sits perfectly on the easel to liven up any spot in your home with a piece of Hudson River history. The canvas edges are painted gold as shown below, for the gem-like quality that these miniatures evoke.

Although small, these minis take as much time to paint as their larger counterparts. I love the way they look and the charm of the small scale.

This is another plein air painting done along the Hudson River from my favorite spot in Cold Spring, NY. I just can’t get enough of this location! Storm King Mountain is on the left, and Breakneck Ridge on the right, with Little Stony Point jutting out into the river. Watching the huge barges, tugs and beautiful sailboats pass through the middle could become a favorite pastime! The clouds were truly amazing in the morning, and the chroma was so strong that I had to pull out the phthalo blue to get the beautiful almost-turquoise color low in the sky.

This is a scene that I really wanted to paint on 9/11 on location, but it was raining. I did an ink and watercolor sketch of this barn with the flag years ago, and I’ve been meaning to go paint it ever since! It was worth the wait; the day was gorgeous.

Unfortunately, I just found out yesterday that the future of the farm, currently owned by Putnam County, is in jeopardy. This breaks my heart. It’s a gorgeous location, one of my favorite places to paint, and should definitely be remaining in public hands and open to us all!

I went up to Frederic Church’s estate, Olana, to paint and soak up some of that Hudson River School aura! This one was done sitting on the side steps of his mansion, just before sunset. It was cool and breezy, with the glow of the late day light overlooking the breathtaking Hudson view.

I’ve been so busy painting that I haven’t had a chance to photograph work and post! I just got home from the beautiful Ward Pound Ridge Reservation. The field grasses are glowing red, some of the leaves are starting to turn, and every view there was simply stunning. I just got in from a couple of days at Lake George, New York. What a beautiful place to relax and paint. I usually don’t get to paint much during family trips, but one morning when we were all at the beach, I pulled out my little pochade box and did this 5×7 under the shade of a nice, big beach umbrella.

Here’s a photo of my painting setup at the beach (You can click to enlarge this image):

070830-lazy-morning-at-lake-george-setup-800.jpg

Here’s what the scene looked like before I started, from the vantage point of my comfy beach chair. That dot up in the sky is actually somebody parasailing! If you click the image to enlarge it, you can just make out the parachute:

070830-lazy-morning-at-lake-george-scene-800.jpg

I did get some great photos to work from one night when we went on a sunset cruise. We also drove up Prospect Mountain, which has 100 mile views, and took some pictures up there. So, there should be more Lake George paintings coming along in the near future. Stay tuned!

The Garden Club has been very busy dressing up the island with gorgeous annuals and perennials. This flower and vegetable garden below the residence castle has an exquisite view downriver. I painted it on location the other day in a vertical format, but I like this horizontal a lot better compositionally.

I’m starting to work from the photos I took at Bannerman’s Island on Friday. This was the very beginning of the excursion, as the boat circled the island before approaching the north shore. It’s a beautiful morning view as the light strikes the structures, and the still water made for vivid reflections. Someday I’d like to do a large painting of this scene. The large structure is the Bannerman Armory. The small structure on the right is one of the towers in the water, which was to be part of a large entrance bay to the island.

This is a second oil sketch that I did on location on Bannerman Island in the Hudson River yesterday. It was a real challenge with time consraints on such a complex subject. This is the remains of the castle residence at the peak of the island.

I tried to walk around the island as much as possible during the time I was there, both to take photos to work from and to do some paintings/sketches on location. I’m pleased with this one in many ways, and look forward to doing some more from this area of the island with this color reference and my photos. I may or may not go back into this painting and bring it to a more finished state.

Bannerman Island Armory en plein air

Posted by Jamie on August 17th, 2007

070817-bannerman-island-armory-500adj.jpg

8×10″, oils on canvas covered hardboard

Bannerman’s Island and the castle-like structures there are amazing sites in the middle of the Hudson River. They are a plein air painter’s dream. The island is currently owned by New York State, and access is prohibited except by special arrangement. A huge series of explosions on the island nearly leveled the buildings. The remains are barely standing and very dangerous—hence the need to limit access to the public. Today, Bannerman Castle Trust took me to the island for a day of plein air painting. I have a show at the Bannerman Island Gallery in October and will be selling some paintings of scenes on the island.

This is one of the oil sketches I did there today. It is the armory where Francis Bannerman kept his stash of munitions. I painted it sitting on the dock before it was time to leave. (It still needs a few tweaks to finish it up; I had to pack up to leave when the boat was ready to go!)

I’ll be keeping this one for awhile as a color reference so that I can do many more paintings from the photos I’ve taken and this plein air piece. Those will be for sale and I’ll post them as I do them. If you’d like a painting of this scene, please email me and let me know what size you’d like, and what medium you want it painted in.

Tomorrow and Sunday I’ll be posting other paintings that I did out on the island today, so stay tuned!

This painting was done on location at Boscobel Restoration. It is the famous overview of Constitution Marsh and the Hudson River. I set up my easel in the cool shade under a big tree along the bluff. I went to the Brewster Farmer’s Market on Wednesday and bought a beautiful bouquet of wildflowers and some early Macintosh apples. I picked out a few flowers tonight to put in this tiny vase, which I’ve always wanted to paint, but somehow hasn’t yet made it into a painting. I set up the still life in my studio and painted it from life. Now I’ll get to eat the apple and enjoy the flowers for the next few days. My palette for this painting was Ultramarine blue, Hansa yellow, Alizarin Crimson hue, Yellow ochre, Titanium white.

I just got back from my trip to Golden Artist Colors headquarters earlier today. What a wonderful experience it was to go there! I picked the brains of some of the very knowledgeable staff members regarding sealing supports and isolation coats before varnishing. I always seal my boards with GAC100; they verified that they feel that is the best sealer for the job. They recommend Soft Gloss Gel mixed with water in about a 2:1 ratio for the isolation coat, so I’m going to get some of that asap. In the meantime, I am busy enjoying acrylics again!

It was brutally hot today. I wanted to paint the Rockefeller Stone Barns, but couldn’t find a shady vantage point. I wandered around until I found a shady spot with picnic tables. There was a lovely view of this stunning oak tree beside a path and field, so I was able to enjoy some much-needed shade while painting.

It’s overcast and threatening to rain today, so I went through my Acadia National Park photos and selected this scene for today’s painting rather than venturing out to paint en plein air. It brought back wonderful memories of being up in Maine, wandering along the trails by the ocean.

This is gouache (opague watercolor) painted on 100% rag, archival Fabriano paper. It is matted in an ivory mat with a blue liner that shows off the blues in the painting and complements any decor. It’s all ready to pop into any standard 8×10 inch frame.

It was way too hot to be standing out in the sun doing this painting on location! My EasyL painting umbrella saved the day, though I was still pretty cooked by the time I was done. The late afternoon light against the side of the red building at Tilly Foster Farm made it glow red-orange.

This building is the current home of the Putnam Arts Council. They are renting the space from Putnam County while their old headquarters is being rebuilt following the terrible fire this past winter. The rolling fields, barns and pastures of Tilly Foster Farm are a perfect setting for artists!

I went into an antique shop and saw this little blue cobalt pitcher/vase and just HAD to have it to add to the vase collection! I told the man in the shop that I’m an artist and he immediately knocked 1/3 off the price, telling me that “artist” is a magic word. hehehe…This is its still life debut. I paired it up with some yellow roses for contrast, the brass bird for color cohesion, and the baby’s breath to soften it all a bit. It was way fun to paint.

I’ve been so busy with the house painters here that it’s been nearly impossible to get out to paint, and when I do, I can’t seem to find the time to take photos of the paintings and get them uploaded here. Today I went over to my friend Mary’s house and had a lovely late day mini-paintout with her in the back yard. This is a view facing her neighbor’s house. The purple and pink clouds over the Hudson River were stunning. I knew they would dissipate fast, so I put those in first, then did the rest of the painting. This painting was done on the property of The Brass Anchor in Poughkeepsie, NY.

This is the painting I did this morning for the Artists on Location event in Garrison, New York. I painted down by an inlet of the Hudson River along Fair Street in Cold Spring. It was much chillier than I’d anticipated, hence the pun in the title of “Cold Spring Morning”. I framed the painting in my car and drove back to the gallery to deliver it. I’m not sure how accurate the color is on this image, since I don’t have the painting to compare with the digital image. The paintings were auctioned off starting at 5pm. I had to go to my opening at the Bannerman Island Gallery in Beacon, so had to miss the live auction.

Artists on Location, Saturday May 12, Garrison, NY

Posted by Jamie on May 11th, 2007

Tomorrow is the big day that happens twice a year, when up to 85 artists gather in Garrison New York to paint the town and the Hudson River. Each artist has the day to paint on location, and returns the completed painting to the gallery at Garrison Art Center, framed, by 3pm. The paintings are hung on display and auctioned Saturday night. I’ll be out painting with the rest of them! I haven’t chosen my location yet, but knowing me, I’ll probably paint somewhere along the Hudson River in Garrison or Cold Spring.

Simultaneously, there is a silent auction ongoing in another gallery at Garrison Art Center. Those paintings are brought by many of the same artists who go out painting. You can read more about the event by clicking the link to Garrison Art Center on the right sidebar here.

The Lower Hudson Valley chapter of New York Plein Air Painters has a show opening this Saturday, May 12, from 4-6pm at the Bannerman Island Gallery. The gallery is located at 150 Main Street, Beacon, NY. Come visit if you can! If you can’t make it there on Saturday between 4-6pm, the show runs until June 3, so you’ll still have time to see our work.

I hope to see you there!

Tilly Foster Farm is an old horse farm that was purchased a few years ago by Putnam County to retain as open space. It has beautiful rolling fields, old buildings and barns, and a fantastic overview of miles and miles from the top of the pastures. This painting was done from a photo I took there in the fall.

Making a Multi-Media Sketchbook
I’ve made a number of sketchbooks over the years and have recently been asked to share some of them. This is perhaps the easiest, most useful, and most versatile of them all. The biggest advantages to this design are that many different kinds of paper can be used for various media and effects, plus the paper can be removed easily for framing.

Use any kind of cardboard, foamcore, illustration board, or matboard for your covers. I used scrap pieces of matboard that I had around the house and cut two pieces to the same size. Purchase some ringbinder rings in an office supply store. I got mine at Staples (very inexpensive). Holes were punched in the matboard for the rings:

Next, cut various types of paper that you like to use for painting, drawing, and sketching. Be sure to cut the paper about 1/2 inch smaller than the matboard. When in use, you’ll be doubling over the matboard to serve as a firm drawing board. The matboard edges also serve to protect the edges and corners of the paper. Punch holes in the paper, making sure they line up with the holes you’ve punched in the covers. You can paint your cover to decorate your sketchbook, but I just left mine blank.

If you use a lot of wet media, consider a piece of foamcore for one or both covers, coated with a couple of coats of acrylic medium, to use as a painting board. You can even tape paper down to it that way after removing a sheet from the book, or use metal office clips to hold it. Oil pastel and soft pastel artists can include sheets of glassine with holes punched, to place between finished drawings.

Glue a pocket to the inside of the front cover. (See image below.) I used this to hold templates for standard sizes. If you have, for instance, a 5×7″ template in the pocket, you can pull it out to draw a quick 5×7 rectangle on a piece of the paper. Then you’ll have a drawing or painting that will fit perfectly into a ready-made mat and frame. The little pocket also comes in handy for photo references, drawings, a ruler, etc. I put a sticker on the inside of the cover saying “If found please return to” with my name, address and phone number.

You can click on the image below to enlarge it:

On the right side, the shiny plastic is a sheet of clear acetate. When working in colored pencil or graphite, I’d keep this under my hand to stop the pencil from smudging. I kept another sheet of it in the little pocket inside the cover. You can also keep glassine in the book, or whatever else you use to protect your finished work.

I hope this helps some of you who want a sketchbook that can do it all!

What an exquisite spring day we had. I met with a group of artist friends to paint at Teatown Lake Reservation in Ossining. The lake is best painted in spring before the foliage comes out. Once the trees and bushes leaf out, the lake views are obscured. Plus, the swans are there every spring and are good models! They have a nest near the bridge. I love this scene so much and have painted it many times. It presents lots of artistic challenges, so I go back every spring. Each year, I find I like my painting more than the year before. This one is my favorite from Teatown Lake so far.

Work in Progress—Lady of the Garden

8×10, oils

This is a work in progress, painted today at the Orange County Arboretum. The painting fell into my palette as I was nearing the finish line. I spent nearly an hour scraping off piles of pure red, yellow, blue and white from the canvas and repainting damaged sections. The background muddied in the process and lightened from the accumulation of a substantial amount of titanium white that landed there in a big glob. It was not a pretty sight! I’ll have to wait until it tacks up a bit and will do some value adjusting and retouching. Then I’ll repost it and add the Paypal link. Until then, you get to see my “WIP” (work in progress).

I had high hopes that the sun was going to break through on my way over to Cold Spring to paint along the Hudson River at 7am this morning. I packed a bottle of iced tea and just wore a sweater. As I stood along the banks of the river, the clouds thickened and the cold wind picked up. I received a serious reality check, realizing that a warm spring day was merely wishful thinking.

This is a favorite spot of mine along the river. That rocky peak is Breakneck Ridge, and the finger of land jutting out is Little Stony Point.

I love this spot on the Hudson. What a treat that the barge came by with its tugboat escort while I was painting. I was just able to get in the main parts of the painting when it started raining. This will be tweaked a bit in the studio to finish it up, but there’s not much left to do….some minor value adjustments and a few more twigs and brush on the left side should do it.

I’ll take another photo after I do the tweaks and replace this one.

Ink and Watercolors, across a two-page spread (8×10″) in my sketchbook

Here’s a grid of 14 of the items for the current Scavenger Hunt, which is ending today. You can read more about the Scavenger Hunt and see the list in this post. They’re lots of fun to do, and wonderful sketching practice. Combined with my Broxz Zoo trip the other day, I think I’ve met my sketching quota for the week!

Sketching at the Bronx Zoo

Posted by Jamie on April 24th, 2007

One thing I learned today is that I prefer to sketch things that don’t move! My friend Kay and I went to sketch at the Bronx Zoo. We brought just our sketchbooks, ink pens, and small pan sets of watercolors.

070424-bronx-zoo-1-500.jpg

It seemed that every single animal started moving as soon as the pen touched my paper. I thought one minute gestures in the figure drawing studio were fast, but suddenly those seemed like long poses compared with what we faced today! They were also farther away than the models—sometimes so far away that seeing them clearly was a challenge.

070424-bronx-zoo-2-500.jpg

Aha! Finally I got to sketch something close that didn’t move—the rhino statue in front of the Zoo Center! *grin* I could do more of these.

070424-bronx-zoo-3.jpg

Camels are a really hard to sketch and don’t stay still at all, and even the bison turned away from us as we started to draw. Next time, I think I’ll focus on the architecture. hehehe…. It was a beautiful day and we had a wonderful time enjoying the animals, the walk, and the company.

1.5×2″, acrylic on 100% rag archival bristol, framed to 2×2.5″ and including hanging hardware, gift boxed
This painting is done from a photo I took on an expedition to Little Cranberry Island off the coast of Maine. This weathered Maine boathouse was right on the shore of the bay. I’ve been wanting to paint this scene for a long time, and may do a larger version as well at some point.

If you haven’t yet begun a collection of “Jamie’s Jewels”, this is a perfect one to start you off in style! Remember too that Mother’s Day is coming. This would make an ideal gift and arrives in a little gold box. This one is slightly larger than my other recent micro paintings, by about 1/4″ (hence the slightly higher price tag).

You can click the image above to see it even larger. Just to give you an idea of the actual size of this painting, here’s an image that approximates the size, depending on your monitor and resolution. You can appreciate how teeny tiny it really is, and how much detail goes into these wee gems:

Alfred Sisley (1839-1899) was the only English member of the original Impressionist group. He died without receiving the recognition he deserved, overcome by cancer and in poverty. He is best known for his landscapes of the countryside around Paris, and studied in the Gleyre studio beside Renoir and Monet.

This is an older piece of mine which I’ve never put up for sale before because I couldn’t bear to part with it. It still won’t be easy to let this one go. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t get the photo to fully capture the richness of the deep reds, or the saturation of the yellow sun. Suffice it to say that dramatic as it may look here in its digital representation, it is more beautiful in real life. This piece is ready to pop into any standard 8×10 frame.

Jamie’s Jewels—Starry Night After Van Gogh

Posted by Jamie on March 30th, 2007

starry-night-box-hanger-quarter-600.jpg

I was so excited by the way this looked once I attached the hanging hardware and gold thread. It will be the perfect gem to hang from a brass tack in a small nook on the wall, or above a mantle. They’d be fun to collect over time, and a grouping of them will make an elegant tiny gallery of “The Masters”! Plus, the little gold boxes I ordered for the minis have arrived! I just had to bump up this post and add the photo of the painting with all the fixings and fittings, the way it will be sent to you! (The quarter is there as a size reference only.)

Do you have a favorite painting by a “master” that you’d like to see as one of my Micro Master Series works? If so, please email me with the name of the artist and painting!

Here’s the painting below about actual size, depending on your monitor and resolution:

This “micro” is my rendition of Van Gogh’s famous painting, Starry Night. I love doing these little copies. It gives me an opportunity to really study a master painting, from the color to the brushstrokes.

This has been painted and framed with archival materials. It will be shipped in a beautiful gold box with cotton batting. It will be sent as shown above, with hanging rings affixed and a gold string to hang it “salon style”. If you would prefer it with a pin back, I can remove the little eye rings for the thread, and attach a pin back instead.

2.5 x 3.5″, Gouache on 100% hot press rag paper, unframed

Sailing in Florida is a miniature, ACEO size painting, done from a photo. When my husband saw the painting, he said he could imagine it framed on his desk for a mental vacation from time to time!

I have such a great time painting occasional ACEO size works. ACEO stands for Artist Cards Editions and Originals. They are collectible paintings in a standard, miniature format. The size is 2.5×3.5″, like baseball cards and playing cards. They are so enjoyable to paint and collect that every so often I do a few of them. Some artists sell prints of paintings in that size as ACEOs, but mine are always one-of-a-kind originals. ACEOs are truly fun to collect for those who love art. Everybody can find a place for these little gems. It’s an easy way to collect work from some favorite artists.

SOLD! Please email me at JamieWG@aol.com to inquire about a similar painting.

1×1.25″, acrylic on bristol board, framed to 2×2.25″

This charming miniature, based on Matisse’ famous 1944 painting “Annelies”, is in a gold wood frame. It can be sent either with a pin back, or with a gold string to hang ‘salon style’. (Specify which you’d like.) Tiny minis like this can also be beautifully displayed on small tabletop easels. It will be sent in a little gold box, just like a tiny treasure.

I chose a challenging subject for such a tiny copy and it took me ages to get all the details in place. The painting itself measures 1×1.25″. With the frame, it is 2×2.25″. The quarter is in the photo for size reference. It’s hard to appreciate the intricate detailing of this piece when seeing it online at larger than actual size!

The image below is approximately actual size, depending on your monitor resolution:

This is one of those pieces that’s hard for me to let go of. I definitely want to do more of them. I’ve selected a Van Gogh painting for my next tiny copy!

Bunch of Sketches

Posted by Jamie on March 24th, 2007

070324-sketch-grid-700.jpg

I finally hauled myself down to the studio late this evening and did a bunch of quick sketches inside little rectangles in my sketchbook. The two page spread measures 8×10. Most of these sketches are from the Wetcanvas Weekend Drawing Event photos, with a couple of other things thrown in, like my Jenday conure, Lulu. I didn’t quite finish up the page tonight. It’s getting late, so I’ll have to wrap it up as I go through the week. Sketching is a wonderful way to get in a little artwork on those days when I don’t have a large block of time for oil painting.

lulu-lucy3-500.jpg

Lulu and Lucy came down to the studio to look over my shoulder and keep me company. Sometimes it gets lonely down here, so I have an extra birdcage and bird play gym in the studio to bring down some avian companions when I’m not working in oils. They are slowly getting over their camera shyness.

I’m itching for the weather to warm up and the spring colors to arrive, so that I can get out for some plein air painting!

Who isn’t getting ready for their springtime gardening this time of year? I know I’m eager! This is a scene of a garden at Stone Barns, which is part of the Rockefeller property in Pleasantville, New York. The big open fields, old structures, gardens, and farm animals make it a delightful place to paint at any time of year.

This painting is beautifully double matted with a blue inner mat and ivory outer mat, to fit perfectly into any 8×10 standard frame. Bring a little springtime into your home!

The painting I posted yesterday made me remember this plein air painting I did at the same park. Although it was pretty much finished on location, when I got it home and looked at it with interior lighting, I decided I wanted to change a few things. I set it aside, and there it sat for a long time. I finally pulled it out today to adjust some color and make a couple of changes. I’m much happier with it now. It’s ready for a frame!

4×4″, casein on gessoed acid free matboard, in a little easel-back jeweled frame for a tabletop
This darling 4×4″ painting is the Chinese Friendship Pavillion at Lasdon Arboretum, in Somers NY. The strong reds of the structure stand out against the greens, with the deep blue sky reflecting in the water. This is painted in casein, which is an archival milk-based, artist quality medium, wonderful for its durability, strong color, quick drying, and mat finish. The painting was then varnished to give it a bit of sheen. I am including the little jeweled frame (shown below with the painting) at no extra charge, so that you can display it right away.

I started a large version of this scene on location some time ago, and it’s not quite finished. Seeing this image here, I realize how much I love this scene. I think I’ll spend tomorrow touching up the big one so that I can finally see that done. Come back again to see the 20×16″ oil painted version!

Sleepy Sunday and Open Studio Life Drawing

Posted by Jamie on March 18th, 2007

12×16″, pastels on Daler Rowney paper, unframed

I spend my Sunday mornings with a group of artists in a figure drawing studio, where we have a different model every week. We practice drawing from poses ranging from one minute to 25 minutes, in whatever medium we choose. It’s no wonder the great masters always worked on drawing figures from life. There is no better practice for the hand and eye, and it is a skill that carries over to all subjects.

The drawing above is in pastel on Daler Rowney pastel paper. I love the different colors it comes in and the woven texture. This was a 20 minute pose—the last pose of the session. We were all a little sleepy by then, even the model!

Below are some additional sketches from the session.
About 12 minutes (the cellphone interrupteth!), 12×16″ on MiTientes paper:

Below are two more 20 minute poses, also 12×16 on MiTientes:

070318-roxy1-20-600.jpg

070318-roxy3-20-600.jpg

At the beginning of each session, we do several quick “warmups”, which are poses that vary from one to 5 minutes. I thought it would be nice for you to see what the very short poses are like. Although it took longer to take the photos and upload them than it did to do the actual sketches, it’s nice to show them on occasion. They are just quick, gestural sketches. Here are a few from today:

International Sketchcrawl #13—A Grid of Sketches

Posted by Jamie on March 17th, 2007

070317-sketchcrawl-13-700.jpg

Today was the International Sketchcrawl #13, and although I didn’t get nearly as much sketching in as I’d hoped, I did finish up a two-page grid in my sketchbook that I’d started a couple of weeks ago. This is 8×10″, across a two page spread. They are: the view from my father-in-law’s apartment overlooking the Hudson River, inside another relative’s home, scenes from the car while waiting for my daughter outside the gym, a compositional sketch for a painting, the office building for the Rockefeller State Park Preserve, waiting again in a waiting room, and a couple of things in my studio.

International Sketchcrawl #13 tomorrow!

Tomorrow is the official International Sketchcrawl #13. That means that artists around the globe will be packing up their sketchbooks, pens, pencils, brushes and paints, and heading out to do as many sketches of their day as they possibly can. Whether you’re an “artist” or not, anybody can participate by just doodling your surroundings as the day goes by. Join me in celebrating the International Sketchcrawl by documenting your day in drawings. I hope to have a few pages to show by the time I post here tomorrow night.

All the snow started melting today here in the northeast. I went to Leonard Park in Mt. Kisco, New York to do some painting. There is a lovely Chinese style pavillion there overlooking the pond. The ice was starting to melt as the sun peeked in and out of the clouds. It’s nice to finally get a little taste of spring!

This is one of my favorite trees along the lakeshore here by my house. The trunk and branches have so many interesting twists and turns, and the foliage turns a bright gold in late fall. I’ve been meaning to get out there to paint it in winter. I guess I’d better hurry up and do that before all the snow is gone!

I have eight paintings ranging in size from 5×7″ up to 24×36″ in a show opening tomorrow at Freshman Fine Arts in Beacon, NY. Please join us for some wine and munchies between 6 and 9pm to see different artists’ interpretations of the Hudson River Valley, from abstract to realism.

There’s always lots going on during Beacon’s monthly “Second Saturday”. Shops and galleries are open late, all the galleries have their new openings then, there are glass blowing demos at Hudson Beach Glass, and wine tasting at the Artisan wine shop. There are wonderful restaurants and antique shops. It’s a great way to spend a Saturday night. Come join the fun!

When out painting landscapes on location (plein air), artists encounter issues with changing light and having to work fast. Sometimes paintings need little fixes in the studio, such as picking out pieces of leaves that fell off trees, bumping up a few highlights, or adjusting color/value in spots to account for viewing with indoor lighting. I have several paintings done on location that have been waiting patiently in the studio for small fixes of one kind or another.

This painting was done last spring in the Italian Gardens at the Vanderbilt Mansion in Hyde Park, New York, and has finally received a few touch-ups. The cherry blossoms there are nothing short of stunning. I can’t wait for late April to roll around so I can paint cherry blossoms from life again!

The new Hudson Valley Painter blog banner

Posted by Jamie on March 7th, 2007

I’m moving my blog next week to its own domain name! I’ll also be changing blog software. My designer suggested I come up with my own top banner for the blog, so I thought, what better banner for a Hudson Valley Painter than a panoramic scene from one of my favorite painting spots overlooking the Hudson River! I’ve done tens of paintings from this location. I went through photos this morning of this overview from Boscobel, taken through many years and seasons. The photo I chose from which to paint the banner was one taken on a chilly November day. This is gouache, painted on Fabriano artistico. It’s 3×12, which is about the actual size of the banner, so I had to break out the teeny tiny brushes. Next I need to break out the Nikon to get a clearer image of it!

It was a gorgeous fall day at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation when I painted this on location, “en plein air”. One of the preserve managers lives in the house at the bottom of this hill. The red fall fields and views of the surrounding hills make this one of my favorite spots on the 4700 acre property. There is a paintable scene in every direction! They recently put in the bench by the tree, providing weary hikers with a perfect resting spot to view the serene landscape.

I’d like to give a big welcome to all the USA Today readers who are coming to visit my online studio/blog as a result of today’s article in USA Weekend. Thanks so much for stopping in and browsing through my paintings.

Most unsold paintings not currently in galleries have Buy Now links so that you can pay by credit card or bank transfer securely through Paypal. Paintings are priced by size, hence the wide price range.

I do lots of pet and landscape commission work, so feel free to contact me if you’ve got a special pet or scene in mind that you’d love to see in paint!
